Silkie thread!

This is Basil, my back up rooster. He is currently in the bantam pen watching over a variety of hens. They had a free range day and he took refuge in the flowers.

He had just had a hair cut of beard and topknot so you can see his eyes. When I don't keep him trimmed up he can't see at all. Poor boy!

here are my new babies! help me on the colors please!!
Mom is buff and possible dads are a blue and a sizzle that I think calico would be the best to describe him. How soon can you tell if they are sizzle? Also, there is a undetermined sex splash in the run with her as well but no crowing, if it is a he, I wouldn't think he would be old enough and I haven't seen any roo behavior from him.

black in back, blue in front, now what would we call the chick in the middle? just a pale blue? silver overtaking white? definately not a washed out splash as it could only come from a black rooster and the hens could have been a white or a buff.

anyway its cute and my favorite of the bunch

Oh thank you for posting his beauuuuuutiful picture!!!!

I had been wanting to see a picture of a silkie with a haircut. I would like to cut my 12 silkies' hair around their eyes when they grow up if they need it.

How gorgeous he is! And his comb is so pretty.

You are very welcome.

I let them go uncut for the longest while. I finally decided that I wasn't going to show this lot and there was no reason to not trim them up some. Their behaviour is totally different after a hair cut. They all get more active and the rooster is decidely more... ahem... roosterish. It's like he can see what he's missing.

They just all seem so much happier when they can see. I try to go out there and trim them up every couple of months.

They look a little butched up close. Again, I'm not planning on showing this lot, so it's no big deal. I know a lot of people use hair bands or little barretts. I couldn't get those to stay on. A quick snip of topknot and a second of beard and they are good to go. It also seems to help keep the hair from curling up into their eyes. That cannot feel good! Mine all sit really still while I'm trimming. It's like they have figured out what I'm doing and they are all for it!

One of my buff girls has figured out that if she dunks her head in the water bowl, her topknot will clump up out of her eyes. She walks around with a wet head most days.

What do I need too look for too make sure I have a pure silkie? Like I red or was told something about the color of the combs and ear lobes and that some was mixed with something else if they didn't have the right colors. I want too get a pure Roo and about 4 hens

This little guy or gal silkie is 1/2 the size of its hatchmates but is just so cute!
