I have a splash Silkie about 7 months old. Larger in size than the others near the same age (all Catdance). Haven't seen an egg yet, but we've heard an egg song in sympathy with the other hens. Just in the last month, near sunrise and sometimes at noon, we hear a definite crow. No other obvious male or female behaviors.

So is this a boy or a girl??

Can someone help me with this Silkie boy? I think he's handsome, but I'm concerned about the hard feathers coming out in his tail. Is this considered a fault or is it acceptable for a boy?

I need some help though...
I've heard the only way to sex a silkie is to wait for it to crow or lay. Is this true?
If it's not, how can I tell?
Because I noticed recently that a few of them are getting their combs but others aren't.....
Okay I need to learn a lot

But we'll start with this.
I don't know if there's another thread going on this question so please point me in the right direction if there is one.
Thanks! I'll shut up now LoL

Ok reading these post and looking at stuff I have a ? so I had a choice of two SQ silkies from a breeder They are both really nice type but one has perfect coloring but not a great "S" shape stance good but not great the other has perfect stance but not great color and also was a little smaller but they were the same age, So my question is did I pick the better SQ Sorry I don't have Pics?

Yeah the hard tail feathers is a fault I believe. How old is he? I would be concerned about it especially if its that hard.

That's what I was thinking...bummer! He's somewhere in the 5-6 month range, I think.

A cockerel's crest usually has streamers or feathers swept behind the crest. The comb is usually bigger too. A hens crest is generally globular.

Pictures would help out a great deal. I would go for the one with the better type. Build your house before you paint it..
