Silkie thread!

Question for the experts while we are discussing weird gender appearances. I have two blue silkies and while I was convinced that I had two boys left I am still a bit unsure. Both have a mullet going on which I thought was streamers and both have a touch of gold on the backs of their necks. The only real difference between them is that one has a largish comb and one has a small comb.
I was sure I had a pullet and a cockerel, then I was sure both were cockerels, now I am just confused. It will be Saturday before I can get some good pics to show you guys though. Any thoughts before then? Can hens have a 'mullet' hairdo?

Those look like very nice chicks. I think your dk blue may be black.

How long do silkies take till they look like there adult selfs , I mean all feaherd out the way theyshould be and that? My silkie is 4 months old .

I don't see much change in my girls after 6 months but the boys continue to improve till a year or longer.

So, I'm setting up my new coop.. I have 3 questions:


___ * Where do your silkies sleep?

I know they like to make a pile, and mine do too. I am trying to make a nice little area for them but every night they are in a different spot.


___ * Would they like to roost if I put a bar about 2" - 3" off the ground?


___ * Also, do they poop in their sleeping spot all night like birds on a roost do?


Can anyone share pictures of their silkie beds?.... Thanks!

It doesn't seem to matter how nice of a bed I make, they move.... They rarely roost no matter how low and I don't see a lot of night poo evidence.

Well, the little pullet that was sitting on her eggs only did it for 1 day. Practicing, I guess she was. She does have them covered up with a couple pieces of hay. They're cold, tho. Oh well. They can keep practicing. Only 7 months old.

Awwww mine are just coming 7 months old and have been laying too for the past couple weeks. They are so cute when they get in the nest and start coooing quietly like they are talking to babies. Sweetest birds ever

One of my 3 month old cockerals(already crowing lol) with the nicest 'fluff'. Does he have vulture hocks? I thought his knee fluff looks kind of long. If he is, is he unusable for breeding? He's just so pretty.

Now, she added a third egg. Maybe she collected them until she has a batch to brood on? The eggs are getting cold while she does.

Mine pile, but if I provide a shelf, they will usually pile on it. Some however, will pile under it and some will completely ignore it. Some will "roost" on 2x4's or concrete blocks. A few roost on actual roosts.

Marge Best could not decide if it was dk blue or black. She thinks blue but said could be black. My DW is ok with either. Marge said both colors about 10 times. She spent a good minute fussing with it. It was the only dark chick in the brooder box.
