Silkie thread!

I don't see much change in my girls after 6 months but the boys continue to improve till a year or longer.
It doesn't seem to matter how nice of a bed I make, they move.... They rarely roost no matter how low and I don't see a lot of night poo evidence.

Thanks, both. Too bad they won't stay in one area so I could make a nice bed to pile on!

Mine pile, but if I provide a shelf, they will usually pile on it. Some however, will pile under it and some will completely ignore it. Some will "roost" on 2x4's or concrete blocks. A few roost on actual roosts.

Interesting. I'll have to see what mine like best I guess then. My one hatchery girl [no big crest so she sees really well -ha ha] likes to roost on the nesting box. My breeder silkies [big crests and beards] like to stay on the floor in a pile!

Awwww mine are just coming 7 months old and have been laying too for the past couple weeks. They are so cute when they get in the nest and start coooing quietly like they are talking to babies. Sweetest birds ever

I just love watching and listening when the get ready to lay. They spend about 20 minutes looking for just the right spot and then usually return to the place they laid the last!

One of my 3 month old cockerals(already crowing lol) with the nicest 'fluff'. Does he have vulture hocks? I thought his knee fluff looks kind of long. If he is, is he unusable for breeding? He's just so pretty.

He has great fluff! Such nice type! All of mine have vulture hocks much worse than this at 3 months and they always out grow it.

Marge Best could not decide if it was dk blue or black. She thinks blue but said could be black. My DW is ok with either. Marge said both colors about 10 times. She spent a good minute fussing with it. It was the only dark chick in the brooder box.

You will probably not know until you breed it and see what it produces. My chicks that are this dark are usually black. Here is the chart you will need. If you breed it to an obvious blue and after several chicks you don't get any splash, you can assume it's black. If you breed it to a splash and don't get any splash you can again assume it's black.

The way the Blue gene works in a breeding can be broken down as follows:
1) Blue x Blue: This will produce 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash.
2) Black x Blue: Produces 50% black and 50% blue.
3) Black x Splash: You'll get 100% blue.
4) Blue x Splash: Produces 50% blue and 50% splash.
5) Splash x Splash: This will give you 100% Splash.
6) Black x black: 100% black

Sonoran, is it typical for one of the chicks to try and always get under the other chicks bellies? The little Paint keeps doing it. I think it is a couple of days younger than the other 3. But I never had this happen with my LF, raised 9 now from day olds.

We started with four white silkie chicks about a month old, one blue silkie hen, a partridge silkie chick about four months, and I just got a drop dead gorgeous partridge silkie roo. Three out of four white silkies got eaten ( ones still living,) blue hen died of bucholism, the gorgeous roo got eaten three days ago , and the raccoon also grabbed the partridge silkies wing and ripped it clean off. She only has one wing now... Anything I need to worry about?

infection! and I would keep those little ones inside! Sounds like your set up isn't really predator proof. I would just set up a little pen in the house if I were you, or a dog crate. That is what I am doing for a baby I got. You will need to keep the open wound very clean, and watch for any signs of infection.
