Silkie thread!

I live in CT also. How many Silkies do you have? We have about a dozen and don't think they need a heat lamp yet. I did turn it on a while back when we had one of those really cold nights. I just go by feel myself, I've had chickens for a couple of years so I'm not an expert.

Maybe someone else can give you an actual temperature?
I lived in the PA mountain woodlands and my silkies and all other chickens did very well without any supplemental heat. It is my belief that animals are stronger without Human comforts. Plus if if the power is lost due to a storm they will have a hard time adjusting to the storm conditions. Kepping them dry and out of heavy winds is best protection. Keeping ice from their water is also a must !

Ok, they have been moved to the basement. Lots of room for them to run around now.
Nice brooder!!
Got my CatDance eggs today!! 18 perfectly wrapped, non broken eggs! Thanks Karen! I think the PO thought they were doing me a favor by putting them in the fridge or something :) I've got them gradually warming up on the heat vents, before I put them in the 'bator. Yay!

My silkies don't get extra heat. None of my birds do. I'm in Eastern Canada.
