Put another 24 Catdance eggs in the bator eight days ago.. Just candled them tonight.... I just threw out 13.. 13! What did I do wrong?? I eggtopsied them all and about 4 had blood rings the rest never developed or were not fertile. Dude, 8 days in and already less then half. Wah! Oh and I drove to the show and picked them up myself. I'm all oh yeah this is going to be the best hatch EVER. I can't wait until my chickens are grown and will sit on them for me. Just venting a little.
That's why I much prefer actual hens over "tin hens" lol. My hatches are so much better and my chicks never have the leg problems I have seen with my incubator. My little giant still air collects dust most of the time. I only use it when I absolutely have to. Besides, I love seeing mothers raise the sweet fluffy babies you'll love seeing it when yours are old enough.
Well it's official... The little one quit on me probably around lockdown day =( The membrane was white and dry so I think the humidity was too low =( Would have been a little white too =(
Color question I caught my 6 month old Buff Catdance boy having fun with my Porcelain pullet. What color would the chicks be? Any thoughts? I don't have them separated by color yet, they are all still only 6 months old.
These are my four wee Silkie chickens, I've had Sootie (the gorgeous wee black Silkie) for a couple of months now. She came in an already mixed flock with six others, but was by no means the bottom of the pecking order. Sootie does as she wants, and is a good wee layer of large white eggs! Just had three in a row! The other three are a new addition to my flock, totaling it up to twenty now. Snowie (the white Silkie) is the boss, with the other two (Cindie, the splash and Smokie the blue) being more timid. None of my Silkies are bearded, as is the norm down here in New Zealand, and seeing as my girls all free range, it makes it easier for them to spot out the nasty hawks! I only have one girl that is both bearded and has a large crest, Houdini the Houdan, and she is far too easy to sneak up on! Here are the four Silkie girls!
A close up on Sootie, she's quite happy just to sit in my lap once I've caught her.
Sootie in one of the nesting boxes, she doesn't like this one, and promptly got out and into her favourite box.
The three new Silkies on their first day here, in order, Snowie, Cindie, and Smokie.
Another of the new girls
Snowie deciding that she does not like a banana treat. Sootie is in the background, where as Cindie and Smokie are hiding under the trees
Snowie asking me why I'm sneaking up on her, while Smokie and Cindie waddle off in the background. I just love the Silkie waddle! So cute!
Smokie deciding to brave the world this morning! You can see Wanda the silver laced Wyandotte in the background.
Four shades of grey
You can hardly see Sootie in the dark of their coop! The girls are all cuddled up for sleeping!
Before I got the new Silkies, often Sootie would seem happy to curl up on the ground all by herself for sleep some nights, then other nights she'd manage to get up and perch. Ever since I got the new three, Snowie has managed to get up herself every night (the perch is about three feet high, with various ways of getting up). I just recently added and then took out a new lower perch. The other two new Silkies would get up and perch there, but look to jump up on the top perch, which caused more hassle than it was worth. I don't want to leave Snowie all alone on the perch with the big girls, so I pop the other two up beside her, more often than not in this order, I think I'm hilarious
Picked me up a Catdance Splash Hen today at the Poultry Swap I went to today. Good type, foot feathering and great toe placement. She was hatched last summer. And boy was General Tso(5mo Blue cockerel) trying to get busy with her.
okie dokie, Thank you, K Epp, for being nice about it. She's still my baby and I wouldn't trade her, she's such a great chick. She kind of has a little fuzz on her head, could she still maybe get her hair? She looks like a little vulture right now, she's still getting in her adult feathers
.
my grandmothers Black Giant chick got curious d:
Well after a stressful hatch, here are my new Catdance babies. One buff, one lavender, and one partridge(??) It hatched out of an egg marked B/S, so I have no idea, maybe a miss marked egg?? Plus a Paint chick I bought today
Sorry about the stressful hatch. I'm right there myself. I can't wait until its all over. I'm making my broodys do what they were made for. Your babes are sweet as sugar!
Hiya. Added a new Silkie boy to the flock. Blue cockerel, about 6 months old- so cute. His first owner called him "Mister Mister", will probably stay "Mr. Mr.) He's a sweetheart.

Gah, tell me about it. I bought the hovabator 1588 with my tax return. Thinking yes this is what I need for the best hatches since I'm going to be paying a good ammount for these special eggs. So disappointing.
I have one Silkie. Her name is Ellie. Shes the sweetest of all my girls. I have four BO and one Black Cochin. All my girls are super sweet but, my Ellie is just wonderful.

One of my broody silkie hen's turkey eggs are hatching! Two poults are out so far, the other 2 are pipping
I'll post some pics tomorrow when they dry off. I have another hen with 4 poults who are a week old, and the actual turkey hen is broody on 15 eggs (which are all fertile and growing!). I'm getting overrun with turkeys as well as chickens now!
