Silkie thread!

Here are our two Silkies.

Our hen (Little Bit) just got does sitting, she did a good job but nothing hatched. She's getting back into the hang of things with the rest of the flock. Not sure what color she would be.

And our handsome Roo, SunKist. He was sold to us as a Buff, but I'm pretty sure he's a Red.

Anyways, Enjoy!

Do you think I should block off half of the brooder? I have a clear tubbawear container I could sit next to the kennel my current chicks are in. Would this work. Or could I just have them in the other brooder until they are about a week and able to move faster and then introduce them?
Either way would probably work. They will still have to do "pecking order" once or twice before they settle in - just watch them.

This is the one that just hatched she thinks it will be a blue. What do y'all think? All I know is she is ADORABLE!!
It is really cute. I think it needs to dry off a bit - still wet from hatching. Once it fluffs up we can guess what color it is. And yes - they are so cute!
What would happen if you crossed these colors?
SplashXwhite
SplashXblue
SplashXblack
BlueXwhite
BlueXblack
BlackXwhite

.
Anything crossed with White except White was answered above. The short answer is "Who Knows". It is based on what is UNDER that white - and it is different for each bird and you can't see it.

Splash x Blue = 50% Splash, 50% Blue
Splash x Black = 100% Blue
Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

@ Sanna: Your chicks are beautiful! I especially like the picture of Spot and the other two on the stairs. Very dramatic!
Thank you!

Beautiful photos! And beautiful babies!!!
Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to BYC!

Your Little Bit is very pretty, I am not sure what color she is either. She looks to have a light body and darker wings, tail and head? SunKist is very handsome, he does look like a Buff with smut (black) in his tail, which is very common for Buffs. I do not see the red.. I believe that color requires black on the wings and chest... but it could just be the pictures.

Very pretty pictures, I did enjoy them, thank you.

I am soooo enjoying this thread! Beautiful pictures. Love all the different colors. I've 1 White Silky hen that is now 2 yrs old, her Black daughter who is 1 yr old, her White Showgirl daughter who is only 8 months. Also have a Partridge Roo, but I've suspicions that he is not pure Silky. I've 2 chicks from the Partridge Roo/2yr old white hen. 1 Partridge & 1 Blue. I just bought 4 - day old chicks from a hatchery. 2 Blue & 2 Splash. Here's hoping they grow well and aren't all Roo's!

Thanks and what about a blueXblue?? Sorry haha. I just want to know the colors if I have a blue, splash, or a black boy.

Welcome to the nice Silkie Thread!

Sounds like you have chicken math too... I love Silkies.

Why don't you think the Roo is pure? Something in his kids? I found out my Black/Red Partridge came from a White Showgirl when one of his babies turned out white. When I asked the lady I got him from how this would happen she said he had two possible fathers, either a Partridge or a White Showgirl. The White Showgirl makes sense. No Showgirl babies (doesn't carry NN) but he carries a copy of recessive white.

You have done what so many people keep asking about - you crossed a white with a non-white. You got a black, a White, a Partridge and a Blue... amazing what White can hide, huh?

Quote:
If you read B J Hopkins post you will see what she got out of a Partridge roo and a White hen.. Partridge and blue.. so you never know.

Blue x Blue = 25% Black, 25% Splash and 50% Blue. That's all the colors. Here is a cool chart:

You would get Silkie chicks.. I hope...

The reason you don't see that answer is it is not an easy answer. You don't usually use a White in any other pen except a White pen. You need one copy from both parents to get White - because most Silkies are recessive white. If you outcross to a Blue - you will get Blue/Black plus whatever genes are hiding under that White once you take one copy of Recessive White off. Who knows what that is.... You can get almost anything, except possibly Buff or Mottled/Calico, and it will carry one copy of recessive white for future breedings.
LOL - thanks for the reply!

These are my new silkies I just picked up Sat. at a swap. I know the one is supposed to be a paint (far right?) but IDK what the other 2 colors are. Any clues?
