Silkie thread!

Well I am down to one partridge baby. The littlest one didn't make it. I don't think he developed right. Sad. I have decided that since partidges look like a sunrise, I would name my little partridge Henley. Since the Eagles sang tequila sunrise. It's hard to name chicks sometimes. I just love the markings on it's head!

Sorry about the little one, sometimes they just don't make it.

I love their markings too - that's why I have "Goggles". He looked like he was wearing a pair of goggles over his eyes as a chick.

Little " chipmunk " has a very stern glare already.

I know! She wasn't loving picture time. Plus they got their brooder cleaned out and DE'd today. They are all pretty peeved at me right now.

Aww Goggles was a very cute nugget! I am going to take close ups of the others later. I just have such a crap camera, It takes like 10 shots before I get one that is halfway decent.

So many cute babies!

I lost one of my 10 Silkie chicks yesterday

It was so unexpected and I have no clue as to why. I had to help a lavender chick hatch because it was upside down and it is a tiny thing. It kept falling onto its back and couldn't get up and wasn't eating. I hand fed it for the first 3 days (good thing I had the Kaybee hand feeding formula Catdance suggested) then it started eating on its own and is doing well. The one I lost was one of the only 2 white chicks I hatched. It was a big chick with a super vaulted skull. It is the one that everyone was sure was a rooster from the pictures I posted. The chicks are on Corid just in case.

Today I banded and numbered the porcelain chicks to keep track of how their color develops as suggested by ChickNmamma. It will help me in the future pick out the chicks that will develop the best color

Does the length of the wing feathers give a clue to what sex the chicks are? Some are very short and some twice as long.

Here are my chicks by number and color~

Chick #2 Porcelain

Chick# 3 Porcelain

Chick # 4 Porcelain

Chick # 5 Porcelain

Sorry to hear you lost one. I don't like the vaulted skulls, I hear people talk all the time about them getting injured. Maybe you could make them a helmet. They are so cute though!

Any ideas what color chick this will be? One of my black Australorp hens snuck a few eggs under my silkie hen, and she hatched them as well as her own chicks. The father is a buff silkie. Any ideas?
