Silkie thread!

Does anyone want to take a crack at sexing the 7 remaining chicks I have. 4 went to their new homes Saturday. They were pet quality because they were missing toes. These pictures are not great, so I can't blame anyone who doesn't want to try. :) I've been busy checking coop temp and humidity so I am bored. It's supposed to get to 7 degrees tonight. Thats the coldest we have have gotten so far this year.
Not sure which white that is, Chance, Sheldon, Bell
Chance, I'm pretty sure on boy

Chance left, Bell right. Bell acts and looks very girly in person.

Bell left, Chance right

I haven't named these two yet. I think the one with the lighter beak is a boy. Very bold. The one on the right is very shy and girly.

Sheldon and Henley

Silkies lay an ivory coloured egg (the correct term is "tinted." I would say that mine are usually about the size of a medium egg; earl ones maybe a bit smaller. B the time they are two or three, they usually lay large eggs.

Mine lay pinkish brown eggs, sometimes even speckled. I have 7 Silkies, one bantam Cochin and one bantam Plymouth Rock with the four Polish that are housed together. The Ameraucanas are kept separate, but it is easy to tell their eggs (blue).

Here is some of my eggs. The two light pinky brown ones on the left and the three on the right will be either Silkie, cochin or bantam. The little egg in the middle actually had some yoke in it. The large cream/white egg on the bottom right is a Polish egg. My Silkies are hatchery birds, so maybe better bred birds would have an ivory egg. Mine don't unless the small cream eggs that are around 40 grams are Silkie eggs, not Polish eggs. The blue eggs and the one Polish egg are all over 50 grams.

I've been away from all of my friends here on BYC for quite a while. Live got real busy. But I am able to talk about it now, I lost my baby girl Marbles. All the girls were out in the yard munching on whatever they could find while I enjoyed my morning coffee. She jumped into my lap and snuggled for a few minutes. I needed to get going somewhere, so I went inside to brush my teeth. I was gone 3 minutes. I walked to the window as I was brushing and saw Lucielle (RIR) all fluffed up doing her rooster strut. I threw my brush down and ran outside. Everyone was in the coop except Marbles. I walked out into the yard and saw the feathers. About 15 feet into the woods he was on her. I chased him off of her. But it was too late. I cried for 2 days. Still so upset. What a special girl she was.

That's terrible. I'm so sorry.

Well she wasn't a Silkie, but I found my Spangled Russian Orloff hen this morning dead
sad.png
I didn't realize she never came to bed last night and after following some chicken prints this morning they met up with dog prints and there she was a few feet away... I'm getting pretty angry with my neighbors letting their dogs roam free! This is the 2nd chicken i've lost. Unfortunately it snowed again today so the prints got covered over so I couldn't tell which house they came from.

Sounds like you need a really good fence or a gun. Some people just don't care if their dogs run all over town.

I hate to ask, but what actually happen what is "he"?
Sorry, It was a Coopers Hawk.

@blipit007 sorry, my quote thing isnt't working...

So sorry for your loss. I have heard so many stories about silkies being taken by hawks because the silkies cant see very well. We don't let ours free range because of this, and because they don't walk far anyways. They don't seem to mind. So sorry and she looks like a gorgeous girl. Rest in peace Marbles
She was only 7 months old and hatchery quality, but was quite pretty for PQ, IMO. Good broody too, was hoping to use her as an incubator this spring. And when I do get more silkies, they will not free range. I will get a portable covered cage. And I will splurge for a real show stopper. It was hard to not let her FR as all the LF girls were adamant about getting out of the pen.

So sorry.
