Silkie thread!

well......I may end up giving her some eggs.....but I don't relly need 5 more chicks....I hatched 12 on new years, and have a flock of 5....

could I give her 2 or 3? maybe throw in some golf balls?

could I leave her in with the other chickens so the babies could get used to her other flock members? my last hatch was with astralorps (as mamas) and the were all so mean to the babies and so we took them away. could I leave her in the coop with the babies/eggs?

also, I would be using my eggs....meaning the eggs will be related to the father....if the babies that hatched were hens would it be safe to use her for eggs as well? or would you not if she could mate with her daddy? do you just recommend buying a few more eggs from my breeder?

If your just going to feel her out to test her, use your eggs. I don't give any broody eggs unless she's been sitting consistently for at least a few days. Short break, all day/night on nest. If they really are broody they'll sit on absolutely nothing. They just want to be on the nest. :) So if she leaves after you collect eggs, she might be debating going broody, but if she's leaving then give her more time. No sense giving her eggs and then her leaving them to roost at night or be out for long periods. You'll know when she's ready. She'll be there unmoving for a few days...then she's ready. It's inevitable with silkies...but make sure she's really broody and not just hanging out for a few hours. :)

Thanks! yesterday while collecting eggs I took them from her.....she still sat. my mom came round and pushed her off....she doesn't want her to be broody.....LOL I do! after marshie was pushed off she sort of just sat there stunned and went again, just sitting where she was! she didn't even move! is this a good sign for a broody? I hope so! then I would let her sit on her eggs...if she lays one the next day I may let her have that one too....

if I go down later ill post a pic of her....maybe a video?

What is a pro to having pigeons? are they good for eggs, or are they just a fun bird to keep?

also, in the second photo, on the far right, there is a tail...the bird is cut off, but is that you silkie rooster's tail, or is it a BTB Japanese Bantam?
The pigeons are useless. Just pretty lawn ornaments lol. Love em though. Definitely NOT good for eggs haha.

That tail belongs to my little accident rooster. I had an OEGB rooster in with my silkies at the time and I didn't think he was breeding with my silkie hens. Boy was I suprised when that silkie egg hatched! He did turn out to be a pretty little guy though. He now lives with the peacocks so that I can keep my silkies and OEGBs pure:

Hi everyone! I haven't been on in a while so I thought I'd share some pictures

This is Early, my black rooster (obviously

). He's about 10 months old now. What do y'all think of him? He's got a lovely beetle green sheen on his wings, back and cushion. He does have some leakage on the back of his neck, but its so light i cant tell if its silver or gold. I also think his wings are a bit low, but considering I paid $5 for him at a yard sale, I guess I can't complain.

And my favorite hen, Wendy, looking fabulous after her moult. None of my other girls wanted to stand still for pictures (boogers).

WOW! He's awesome! And at a yard sale! You were in the right place at the right time!

Thank you!
Yes, he was a great deal. The lady I bought him from didn't have many for sale but I wish I would have bought them all. I would have if I'd have know they were going to be so nice. I've had a devil of a time find good blacks that are actually black!

Does anyone else name their silkies after Kungfo characters/stars? We have BruceLee, (she is a blue hen but was named such because her egg spun and rolled around the incubator for 24 hours before it even pipped), PO another hen Splash. And this guy was Master Shifu, but he reminds me of Williams in the Bruce Lee movie with the big afro. Jim Kelly was the actor.

Dont mind the mess about a foot of snow has melted in the last few days.
