I had to share bc my son LOVES "his" chickens and it is the sweetest thing to see him with his Dot, this chicken rides in the wagon as my son totes him around everywhere and is perfectly content with it. Now that its warm I let him go out whenever and it never fails I find him with Dot... I love it

I keep wondering with all the Tasmanian hawks/predators you lose your chicks to what you do to secure the monma and chicks from aerial predators? Are they in a net top or roofed enclosure? It seems brutal to keep letting the hawks attack the babies out in the open - or do you let them sink or swim in the elements to see which ones are the hardiest to survive? Maybe have a few low-to-the-ground roofed shelters for the Silkies to dive under? Not a criticism but just wondering out loud as everyone has their own style.

You seem to do a lot wondering out aloud. My chickens have several huts and shelters in which to hide. I'm sure that 4 chickens are much easier to control, than 50+

Anyone that has had to deal with a hawk will know how cunning they are.
As you can see I have lots of shelter.

Put my birds outside for the first time yesterday and within a minute saw a hawk flying overhead. Cunning and attentive obviously.

My coronation crush their own eggs. It only works the other way round. Ie silkie hatching large fowl. I saved this one but as you can see the shell is crushed.

Now living happily with silkie momma.

Hi, a couple of months ago I got rid of my silkie rooster because he was too big (double, maybe more the hens weight) and there were new boys growing up, now I think I made a bad decision and kept only one guy, but he is not trying to mate nor crowing and is now 7 months, he doesnt seem to be interested sexually and his sisters are all laying...should I start looking for a new one?

Oh my!!! Well, maybe she will go broody then. Be of some use besides just adorable! Lol

I put 6 eggs in the nest box in the bantam pen yesterday. Got up this morning, & my Silkie is in there!!!! She's just laying there situating the straw. Yay!!!!! I'm so excited! Idk if she's laying or brooding, either way works for me!

I know there will be a variety of opinions but i was wondering if you could answer my quick poll:

Do you separate your silkies from LF?

If no, do you have a LF roo with your silkie pullets?

They only thing(s) I do for silkies that I don't do for my LF is/are:


I am getting m first silkie girl and her clutch in a few weeks and am trying to figure out what will be best. Almost done with the broody coop and pen

I don't separate mine.
I do have LF roosters with my bantam hens.
The only things I do for my silkies that I don't do with my LF is baby them. I also trim their crest feathers so they can see well.
