In a small cottage we don't have room for incubating or brooders so I live vicariously through others' blessed events! Thank you for sharing!

Yes, that is a beautiful setup you have - looks like Paradise for 50+chickens. And, No - 4 chickens is not easy either. Got to go to the doctor tomorrow first thing to check out my Black Silkie. She takes a couple limping steps and sits down so she's not foraging or getting around to eat outside. It's Sunday and can't take her for a vet visit today but 1st thing Monday morning to see what's up with her. This will be her 3rd vet visit in 9 months. She is always injuring her feet or toenails. This time she might have injured the leg/foot either jumping up to the nestbox or jumping down. None of the chickens will use the ramp! Grrrr! There's always something going on with this girl.

Oh I do hope it's just a bruised foot.

I wouldn't worry about the others yet, it can take 2-3 days from wo to go. If you set the eggs together leave the lid on the bator closed so as not to risk shrink wrapping the others. Once this little guy has hatched he can go a good 24 hours without food and water.

Put my birds outside for the first time yesterday and within a minute saw a hawk flying overhead. Cunning and attentive obviously.

Yeah, we have a Cooper's Hawk that loves to watch all the birds in our yard - wild birds as well as chickens. I had to bring in my limping Silkie today so she wouldn't be "bait" but she was a smart girl and hid in the coop. Have her in the house to make sure she eats and stays hydrated as she won't forage or walk around to get to the feed dishes. She's going to the vet first thing Monday morning - her 3rd visit in 9 months! She's always injuring her feet/toes/nails. I think she gets injured either OCD scratching in the nestbox or jumping up or down from the nestbox. None of my hens use the ramp - Grrrr!

Big news on the farm! First chick to be hatched under a hen, and not the incubator, was hatched today! A little Lavender (self blue). Whoo hooo!

I had to share bc my son LOVES "his" chickens and it is the sweetest thing to see him with his Dot, this chicken rides in the wagon as my son totes him around everywhere and is perfectly content with it.

Now that its warm I let him go out whenever and it never fails I find him with Dot... I love it

It's so nice to see that your boy has a roo rather than a hen as his "Dot" - I'm paranoid about letting any children handle my egg layers because children squeeze the sensitive back-end sides where the reproductive process goes on. Kids unknowingly squeeze the chicken when it flaps. So I applaud the nice choice that you have a roo for the adorable pet. Who says only girl children can be gentle? My son was naturally sensitive with pets as a youngster. I think children learn by example but some children are just instinctively sensitive.
