Silkie thread!

Here’s a couple of better shots of Willow. I’m hoping a girl!!!

This is Sparks. I’m thinking rooster, because he is a lot bigger than the other 3 I got him with.

And this is Madison. I’m pretty sure this is a hen.
Any thoughts? Am I totally off. I’m kinda new to Silkies. The ones I have came as a pair, so I didn’t have to sex them.

I have some 3 1/2 week old chicks from Ideal. Four are white Silkies as I am hoping for a hen or two who will go broody and hatch and raise chicks. These are my first Silkies and I don't know what their primary wing feathers should look like. All four chicks have long, thin soft wing feathers that seem smooth with fuzzy edges. The rest of their feathers are as I expected. Are the wing feathers correct for Silkies? If not, might they be able to fly (or assisted jump) better?

The Silkie chicks are better than I expected as all have flat triangular combs, black skin, legs, and feet, dark beaks, the correct number of toes, and possibly little muffs. They all have feathers on their outside toes and legs, thin on three chicks and heavy on the fourth one. They have normal shaped heads, not vaulted, which I am happy about. They are holding their own well with the larger chicks (New Hampshire and Barred Rock pullets).

Based on behavior, I think I have two pullets and a roo; I keep changing my mind about the fourth one.

So I was thinking about useing an old 40 gallon breeder aquarium (36"x18"x16") that I used for a lizard in the past for my chicks when they come. I have a screen top and heat lamps from the past lizard aswell so I thought it would be a good idea. But what do you all think?

the heat lamp may or may not be too hot for the chicks, depending on what type of lizard you were keeping.
How many do you plan on keeping in there?

it was a chinese water Dragon. The lamp is a 50 watt heat lamp.
I have 9 comming in the mail.

So long as the area is big enough for them to escape the heat if they are overheating. I have one of those reptile thermostats and follow the ' chicken chick ' heat for age chart. I've found the infra red bulb best. I tried the ceramic one but I had to keep going in and checking it was still on. The infra red is visible at a quick glance and also makes it easier to check on them through the night, without disturbing them. My advice is to keep a spare globe on hand cause if it's going to blow , you can bet it will be when the shops are closed. I know a breeder who lost 40 x 2 day old chicks because he hadn't noticed the lamp had blown.
