Silkie thread!

She is going to be a donation for an auction for St Jude. The woman that does the PNIP and AI testing has a benefit every year to raise money for St Jude and I always donate silkies for the auction. Last year she raised $97,000 in a weekend. It's a big event. I donated 4 silkies and a home made quilt last year and I plan to donate more silkies this year.
I have been following your posts about this precious little Silkie and applaud you for doing everything possible to get her back to normal and wanting to donate a pullet to the worthwhile auction. However I keep wondering if donating her to an auction after her rocky illness is a good idea. No one will take as good care of her as you if she should happen to relapse later. My little Black Silkie is a personality pistol and no one would ever guess she has health issues - sometimes CRD flareups, and other minor things, so she's not robust. I could never pass her along to another home knowing that she has to be watched closely. She's had 4 vet visits in one year and as well as she looks we know how to pick up on her slightest "off" day and treat/medicate her appropriately or know when it's time to rush her to the vet before she gets worse. It's like having a child w/ disabilities that you just adore but have to exert extra effort to keep well. An auction is a fine fund-raiser but unless the winner is truly aware of the Silkie's health issues I would hesitate about who would win a bid on her. JMHO.

If she isn't back 100% before the benefit I won't donate her. The people that bid on the items at this benefit pay ALOT. I've seen them overbid on big screen tv's and turn around and donate it again. Last year it was done twice. I won't send a chicken off to die just to get a high bid. Thats cruel to her and I certainly wouldn't go thru all this to get her back to her sweet self just to end up dead. If she isnt 100% she will stay with me. I have a hard time rehoming special needs chickens. I just don't want to let them go because I'm afraid they won't get taken care of with somebody else like they will with me. This pullet was fine till about maybe 5 weeks ago. She suffered a brain injury. She's not sick or messed up. Providing she returns to her regular normal self she will go to the benefit. Otherwise she will stay with me. I"ve gotten really attached to her and she is so sweet. She was sweet before her injury.

PJ and DJ (4/1 & 3/31) Momma is an EE and Daddy is a white SIlkie.

They're so cute! I bet they'll be really pretty when they grow up.

Be careful with the newspaper as it can be slippery for the babies and can cause leg problems. I would shred it up if it was all i had to use for them. Good luck with 'em!

I figured you felt that way and you have me that also feels that way. Our little Black is a pistol w/ the funniest antics of all our flock - really extra special but we're thinking maybe it's because of her various issues and the extra amount of our handling her that's made her precious or added to her funny personality. I'm always calling out to my DH and we swear she calls his name in the same tone as mine when she's wanting inside or wants a treat, etc. Anyway here's wishing you the best w/ your little girl. Pick another pullet for the auction if you can.

That was in my friend's brooder she had at school. They have shavings in the one here. They were only in it for about a day before I brought them home.
