Silkie thread!

I just bought two black silkies not too long ago n I'm praying they grow up to look like all yours do!! I'm new to silkies n my black baby has something wrong with his beak! It's almost like his nostrils are swollen or a growth or hernia of some kind. I can't figure out what's wrong with him. I want a pair of sundown silkies!! I'd die to have some and a grey one too!! I'd pay whatever the cost !! I can't find any where I live

I'm praying the last two I bought are real n full blooded silkies!! They don't look as fluffy as the babies in all the pics I've seen but there's hair on their legs! Can u please help give any input on if u think I have true silkie babies and if u know what's wrong with my baby?? I'll have to post some pics tomorrow but I do have a couple pics now I can post of the baby that has the " boo boo" on his nose!

Sorry!! I'm new to BYC and to silkies! But how come some silkies are more fluffy n poofier than others? Even in the face?? Some look like adorable fur balls and others have a balder face? I'm confused

I just got 2silkies ( so the breeder says) and I'm praying they are the fluffy faced adorable silkies I'm seeing in a lot of everyone's pics!!! I have to find out what's going on with one of my babies though! I pray it's not contagious bc he shared a brooder for almost 2weeks with 5 other chicks!!

If I didn't blow all my money on my care credit card last week on the vet for my Persian cats and another baby chick I had to put down I would rush this little guy to blue pearl but I don't have the money for it right now.

it cost me $130.00 last week on one baby chick just for the vet to tell me he had a herpes virus in his legs n had to be put down. I cried. He couldn't walk when I brought him in. I was so upset bc the lady gave him to me to take home to try n nurse back to health when I bought my baby seramaS from her and I just knew I could help the poor little guy but it didn't work out that way. Anyways I'm glad to be here n excited to learn a lot from everyone. Any input on my baby would be gladly appreciated! Thanks

Welcome to BYC. There are 2 different silkie varieties. Bearded (poofy face) and non bearded (balder face)

Silkies to me never look consistently the same. Other than a bearded and non-bearded and naked-neck variety no 2 Silkies ever look alike - some have bonnet crests, vaulted skulls, flat skulls, smaller bodies, larger bodies, fluffier tails, skimpier body feathering, etc etc etc. RIRs or Legs all seem to consistently look alike but not Silkies. It seems they look their most beautiful as pullets up to about 6 or 7 months old. After they start laying eggs it seems the luster goes out of their feathering as the nutrition is directed toward laying eggs rather than toward feathers. I have an older hen that doesn't lay many eggs any more and since she's slowed egg production she has never looked prettier with thick body feathering, tail, and feathered legs/toes. She's actually managed to keep a bit of crest and beard too which is difficult to upkeep with outdoor free-range Silkies. Our Silkies nibble around each other's eyes so vision has never been a problem with them - weird that it's just around the eyes as if they know that's where they need to clear their vision. Once a few years back our older Silkie was pure bald because a mean Marans would roost next to her and pick her bald and chew her walnut comb - poor thing - the crest grew back but she doesn't have a pretty walnut comb anymore. We re-homed the offender once we discovered her. Chickens are not all nice to each other which is why we stay with gentle non-combative breeds now. We have zero tolerance for assertive behavior in our small flock.

So sorry about losing your chick. I just spent over $100 on a juvenile shipped to me a few weeks ago that had Cocci, CRD, and round worms all at once. I have a good vet and sometimes save money when I know all he needs to diagnose my chickens is a fecal sample and that way I just get charged a lab fee. Of course I've been going to him for a couple years and know now if I have to take a chicken in for exam or if I just need to drop off a lab sample. It's nice to have a vet that sees poultry but it can get expensive and there's never a convenient time for emergency visits. But every animal deserves a good vet whether it's a dog, cat, iguana, parrot, aviary bird, poultry, goat, sheep, pig, or horse!

Herpes in the legs means that your chick had mareks disease , did the vet explain to you how easily this virus can be spread to your other chicks ? This article explains all about it.

I do hope that you have removed that seller from your contact list. If it were me , I would make sure others were aware of this unscrupulous seller.
