Blue Line Silkies has nice birds. They're located here in Tn. Hattrick is another breeder with lovely birds. I've gotten birds from Sleepy Hollow Farm in Va as well, I'd imagine Jamie still breeds Silkies, but I haven't been in touch with her in a while. Karen Larson, Geri Godina and Sheri Minkner have GORGEOUS birds. Karen advertised some eggs for sale recently and Sheri is pretty active on Facebook (she breeds Sizzles too). Those are the only breeders I can think of off the top of my head. I'll post back if I can remember anymore

I can agree that Sherri's birds are incredible. I have several of hers in my flock and they are awesome. There's also Amy Piehl out of MN, she's here on BYC too... I've got three birds from her, one cock, one hen, and I think a second hen (Taylor) and her birds are astonishingly beautiful. I've been meaning to take photos of the other hen I recieved as a chick with Taylor... her name is Selena and she may well be even prettier than Taylor, she came out black with a few dark brown highlights in the hackle and wings.

Crimeney! Was hoping this thread wasn't dead! Can we get a recent list of Silkie breeders up in here? I keep googling breeders names I find, and then discover they no longer breed chickens or silkies! So discouraging!

The best way to find Silkie breeders is to join the American Silkie Bantam Club. They send out a breeder directory each year that includes the names of Silkie breeders from all over the US.

My black 2 day old silkie has splayed legs. I'm going to tape his legs to a stick. But for how long do I leave him like that, with taped legs. Other chick is a bamtum black one was only click silkit to hatch.

There's no need to use anything other than a bandaid. The legs aren't broken so you just need to support them under the body. Wrap one end of the sticky bit around one leg leaving the center of the bandaid between the legs and then wrap the other leg, using just the sticky bit . You need to check that it is in place often, and it may need to be taped for 3-5 days.

Well, wandered into a feed store and there were silkies with awful pasty butt. I got the 6 with the worst looking butts, so I could give them a shot....since the workers didn't care at all (I brought it up and they blew me off something terrible). I know they're not great quality silkies.....but I couldn't leave them to suffer not being able to poop. So, they'll be pets. Fortunately, we needed more chickens anyway, since only 2 of our 7 four week old buff opringtons appear to be ladies.

Any chance I could get some guesses as to colors? I'm posting 2 pictures of the yellow banded chick, since I love her head spots.

What y'all think of the red pyle? She/he surprised the crap out of the breeder since it came out of an all white pen. Now she's scratching her head and trying to narrow it down as the which one produced this little one. ha

Congratulations on the rescue! What surprises me more than the feed store employees not caring about the chicks is that not all the chicks you purchased have the usual feathered Silkie legs/toes. Maybe they'll come in later? I know a vaulted skull is not necessary for a nice full crest but the feathered legs are a must. We went to a feed store a couple weeks back and found a dying Brahma chick getting trampled by the other healthy chicks. For G's sake at least take it out of the traffic to have a peaceful rather than painful death! It took a few minutes to find someone to rescue the little chick but by then it was dead. Chicks are an easily replaced inexpensive commodity and therefore not a product to have concern by feed store workers. I know death is inevitable with animals but at least be humane with caring for them.
