This is Gabby she is an 8 week old silkie chicken that I got 3 days ago for my birthday! I love her very much and I really think that we are bonding together. It's so nice to see all the silkie owners come together and share their love for their chickens!

She looks like a sweetheart! I just got a few more silkies, too.

jas humbert - Do you know what the cost of the equipment was when your husband looked into it? I have wondered if there might be enough of a local demand to offer sexing services (might need to find a better way to advertise that, lol) in order to cover the costs but start up is always the hardest part, waiting for a return on an investment. I know commercial hatcheries would be far too overwhelmed with genetic testing on huge volumes of birds that need to be shipped out as day olds but someone who does enough hatching on a smaller scale for a local market might eventually get a return on the investment if it is not too expensive. I always have more time than money to invest.

He hasn't looked into it recently, he just made an off-the-cuff remark probably trying to encourage me not to spend more money on chickens. He hasn't been in that field in several years and a lot has changed. I did a little looking up on electophoresis equipment and all. Prices have come down in the last few years and it is getting easier to use without being a professional. But still looks like a minimum of $600+ even with the cheapest less automated slower mini machines. Speed is a big factor in price- 30 minutes vs under a minute. . I would also have to consider the cost of running each test. Gel is not cheap. Probably not something that makes sense for me unless I was breeding on a much larger scale than I ever envision doing.

I was curious if you guys could help me sex my silkies mix...I believe they are mixed but I honestly have no clue. I have three and I have no clue what to look for as far as determining gender. Here they are! TIA

Ok well the red like one I don't even know if that is a silkies and the white one could be mixed and the black one is silver partridge as fro gender it's to early to tell

Thank you. I will do that. If it was any other color I'd feel comfortable making a call but I'm new to lavender and I don't want to take steps backward from the great work that went into their current breeding

One of my silkies. His name is Almonzo. I am assuming it's a boy.

The silkier with its head up in the back is clover I'm thinking a girl. They are almost two months old.

Yes, that is very common. But some will start laying, like my Buff Orpingtons, and consistently lay about 6 eggs a week the first year. It depends upon the chicken, laying conditions.

I thought I would post this here and see what everyone thought. **This is not my chick** it was posted for sale on a local facebook page but the color caught my attention. I've done lots of research but never saw a dark bodied chick with white leg feathers. Does anyone know what color it would grow up to be? Or is it a mixed colored silkie with two different colored parents?
