I doesn't look barred to me either. It certainly could be a darker splash. Or maybe the off chance of mottled? You can look up pictures of both, Although mottled is pretty rare and dark splash is probably more likely She's cute- I like her. Where did you get her? You could ask the seller if she has anything else like this.
Interesting! Thanks for the update! So my sex link project has continued to remain informative, but has not gone as well as I hoped. I came home to another of my own Silkie eggs pipped, but still and quite obviously dead. I took it out and chipped away a bit of the shell to be certain before completely opening it up. The chick inside was perfectly formed other than what appeared to be a slightly misshapen skull (I assume the reason for its demise). It lacked the muddled white spot atop its head and showed black legs. Actually they were incredibly black. Perfect toes and perfect walnut comb too. :/ So that's kind of disappointing. I autopsied and indeed it was a pullet.
So so far I have learned:
- Silkies for some reason insist on having tons of color in their chick down, even when they are expected to be mostly black. This is going to make detecting the white spot in cockerels difficult.
- On the other hand, the pigment difference is plain as day - the first (presumed cockerel) chicks legs are a very light pink, while his sister's were incredibly dark. I may end up using that to sex, instead of trying to breed for chick down which will better show the white dot, as it so far seems more reliable. We'll see if that trend continues with my next hatches. Plus I still have 2 Silkie eggs in the incubator.
SO Cute! Here she is with her new babies
