@sue25 - it's so hard to resist handling chicks their first day home, isn't it? LOVE your black chicks. We just lost our 6-yr-old Black hen to ovarian tumor -- she was our spunkiest funniest smartest littlest hen. I've heard others share that their Black ones seem to have an extra spunky personality about them. Look forward to more pics.

Got my Silkies today and two Black chicks. The chicks are.a.week old. I also got 2 splash Sizzles. There beautiful. Pics will come soon but going.to let them settle for a couple of days.View attachment 1116552 View attachment 1116560

FirstTimeClucky - cute Silkies - I love your Partridge. Although your Partridge has streamer tail feathers it's hard to tell male from female. My Partridge girl has some streamer feathers on her rear pouf at 6 yrs old. At 2 to 3 months the Partridge boys will be very colorful with bright deep tones with possibly some shiny black feathers while the females seem to have rounder poofier tail fluff and have more subdued browns and golds.

My little partridge is getting long, shiny orange feathers on the back of his neck now. I was told that he's also a "cuckoo", does that refer to the stripes on his back feathers? It's hard to see now because his eyes are now almost hidden by feathers, but he's also got chocolate brown stripes around his eyes, running from beak to back of the head. Here's a pic of the striped feathers, it was taken before the orange neck feathers grew in. You can see a bit of the striping around his eye.

Would anyone know if true fibro silkies are common or if they even exist? Such as roosters that will have a totally black comb?

I have some FREE bearded silkie roos. I am in Northern NY between Watertown and Potsdam. 2 of them are from paint and are crowing. 2 are from white pen 13 weeks not crowing but starting to get combs, have silver gene. Sorry, I can not ship.

Hello everyone I was wondering if it was to young to tell the sex of my chicks? I'm new to having chickens. Also they will be moved to there own pen now that they've out grown there brooder. I think that's what it's called and I don't know what to use for bedding as I've been using pine. And I noticed it's turning there feathers on there feet yellow :/ thank you for any help

Hi Bethyboochicken it is way too young to sex these silkies. Silkies are the hardest to sex a lot of times not knowing sex until they are 4-6 months old. I have a little one that is 18 weeks old that I could have sworn was a pullet till it came out of the coop crowing this morning. What I have learned about silkies is you have to sit back and have patients and wait till they tell you what their sex is (crow or lay) and know that you will most likely have ALOT of roos.
My silkies started out with the pen on grass but that didn't last long. Now I have put dried leaves, dried grass clipping, and other organic materials down and they dig in it and love looking for the bugs and worms.

This hot humid weather is killing me I get up in the morning at 7 and start.tending to all my chickens. before I can do errands I have to take a shower and in the evening I start all over again tending my chickens and have to take another shower after being outside for an hour or.two. Most of my chickens are.bantums with feathers feet. There is plenty of shade and cover where they are kept. But sometimes I have to fill there water several times.a.day. I love all my chickens but sometimes it's very taxing to take care of them in the August heat and humidity in the south.

Silkies are supposed to have mulberry colored combs, not actually black.
