Silkie thread!

Well I thought it would never happen to me either.... I don't get around to the major national shows. I've only been raising silkies for just about 10 years. I don't have a fancy website or advertise in the Poultry Press or elsewhere. Why would I be targeted? A lady in Indiana was hit in late April, I was hit the last week of April, and Premier was hit 2 weeks after me. This is people coming into private barns with undisclosed locations and taking specific birds. The only place that my farm location was ever broadcasted was on the form when the state came out to do my NPIP approval. My game cams have logged more pictures of a vehicle driving in the yard at like 2 am since then too. The dogs and vehicles sitting int he yard now probably stopped them from getting out. At the fall shows this year, it is the first time I've experienced someone I know getting birds switched off on them. This is the 2nd time in 3 years at the MN State show that someone has gotten birds stolen directly out of the show cages from people I know. The problem is getting the PROOF that these people did it and getting them banned. Even after talking to the cops after my theft, I found someone can just take your birds, you might even find them, but if you can't PROVE that they are yours, you are pretty much S.O.L. All it takes is for them to clip off a leg or wing band. Microchipping is sounding like a better option for me all the time.

This is totally amazing that this kind of theft and sabotauge can happen at a national show! I believe that 24 hour (ceiling mounted) surveillance cameras are the solution. That way, the thief KNOWS it will be on tape and there will be no denying it. That will either keep them honest or get their butts convicted. Frankly, I don't care which, as long as the rightful owners get their birds back.

Until they are more afraid of the punishment than desirous of the goods, it will keep on happening.

As far as the glue on the crest incident goes......please refer back to the earlier suggestion about tar and feathering.......

Doesn't anybody keep a record of who does this sort of thing? I don't believe in convicting on circumstantial evidence, but if you
KNOW for sure who did it.....pass the word around quietly so the honest people can be on guard!!

Yes, I remember you having them stolen from your house, and to me that would be even worse than having them taken from a show. Your home is supposed to be a safe haven, and your peace of mind is destroyed when someone robs you of that security. I personally think that tatooing as the rabbit people do, or microchipping as you suggest, is a better, more permanent way to mark your identity on your animals. Properly sized seamless legbands can be removed, but it takes a great deal of difficult as they should fit closely to the leg, making it difficult to fit metal snips inside the band.

As show cages are made, there is really no way to truly secure them. Never heard of dumping glue on the crest of a competitor's bird; I think if someone were caught doing htat or similar they would be banned from that show and probably from the APA & ABA; that is a WAY serious offense.

I don't know. I've never had ANYTHING taken, and I really do not hover over my stuff. I'm usually around though, and I check on my birds often. I've never understood an exhibitor who would drop off their birds at the beginning of a show and come back when it's time to coop out. Heck, at least half the fun is talking chickens with others who share the passion.

I also feel that way. I can only speak from having exhibited with juniors, and even having watched how adult exhibitors deal with their birds, but I don't quite know what to make of some of them. I showed at a state fair this year, really small. My Silkie was beat out by a nice RIR bantam cock, certainly not hatchery stock. Very dark and well-kept. I wanted to exchange words with the owner, and longed to meet him/her, but when awards were given out, the owner didn't even show up to claim the prize. (Check THE NEXT DAY, and the bird wasn't even picked up yet.) In other shows, people would drop off the bird(s) and come back just in time for the placings. I have the most fun doting after my birds and speaking to others. It would be so un-natural to just get up and do something else? That's the whole reason to attend!

IMO...

Well we have 6 babies out, one egg pipped for sure, and a lot of peeping. One of the baby silkies is absolutely GORGEOUS, already has a topknot and a beard. All have vaulted skulls and nice feet. Had a little bit of trouble with one of the babies (pipped and then almost got shrink wrapped) but i helped him a bit and he is alive and peeping right now. The babies are learning to drink out of a rabbit water bottle, lol

I thought I would post my newest addition of silkie chicks! The first 6 are from eggs I had bought from a fellow BYC'er. I am so happy with them. I bought six and six had hatched! The last 2 are from eggs from my current flock.
The pictures aren't the greatest since they are taken with my phone.
