Silkie thread!

That is food coloring that hasn't come off yet.

This pullet is one of our paint silkies that we bought from Judy Lee who is the original breeder of the American Paint silkie. We have a trio plus an unsexed chick...the one that is standing in the feed bowl.

Judy was marking the ones that we chose and a little too much food coloring dropped out!! I'm hoping it will come off because I'm going to show them in AOV next weekend at the Sunshine Classic in Lake City, Fl.

The trio is still a bit young, so no breeding yet...but I anticipate they will be producing within the next 1-2 months.

The solid whites are some juveniles...about 4 months old.

Thanks. Yes, she is a nice little girl. I'm pretty sure I entered her in the Sunshine Classic show next week but would have to check her legband to be sure. She is about 6 months old and just started laying a few weeks ago. She will be moved in with the paint cockerel as soon as he begins breeding. We are crossing the paints on really nice blacks to improve type. She should put a lovely chick on the ground.

We are trying to improve the "type" in the paints, i.e., larger crests, darker skin, darker eyes, better wings, etc. The dominant white of the paints that I am working with will throw about 50% paints, 25% whites and 25% blacks when bred to blacks. When breeding paint to paint the percentage of paint is much higher, but you still do get occasional whites and blacks/blues.

Okay I have a question for the silkie experts on here I hatched out 2 silkies I purchased from some ebay eggs. One was labled blue and one was labled black...well chicks hatched and I don't think those are the colors of the chicks I 've hatched 2 blues before but this is nothing like that so I figured I'd ask everyone on here what they thought.

Chick number 1 in egg labled as blue:

Chick number two we named panda cuz of it's face lol another weird thing is panda has 5 does on both feet but one toe is pink

pink toe

The first looks like a blue based chick but with partridge markings and the second one is a black. Don't worry about the pink toe....it will melanize in over the next few weeks. Sometimes chicks are hatched with some minor odd colorization...but they look to be what they are supposed to be...except for the partridge.
