I am looking for some info on Silkies so what better place to come. I currently have only 1 pair .In the past I had 3 (2roos and 1 hen). There were never any fights and the roos actually seemed like buddys. I am getting some more and was wondering if this is normal? Do they usually fight or not? The roos seem to be alot hardier then the hens and of coarse don't go broody. I don't want to order straight run if there will be a problem. Any advive will help.Thanks.

Poor guy... he does look beat up and deserving of some special treatment. I'd say he's not full silkie... wrong comb and red earlobes. Hard to say for sure on his color but based on his hackles and wings I'm going to guess he's blue.

You are wonderful to take him and give him some TLC. He needs time to regain his feathers and his dignity. Put him on some extra protien snacks (like canned tuna) and yogurt mixed with Manna Pro Gamebird crumbles (22% Protein) just to give him a boost.

My guess is, he was heavily invested in the stock market and lost his.............butt. Ha!

I have one white silkie hen. I got a call yesterday and will soon be recieving 3 more white hens and a roo. But, today as I searched online for hatcheries, I saw the most beautiful red silkies. I think I am going to have to build more coops and order some of these. My silkie is currently with my cochins (a hen and a roo). Scarlett and Rhett except Victoria without any problem. Of course, I have noticed that when I introduce new chicks to my flock it takes about 3 days before they start mixing. But, once I get more silkies, they will each have their own coop. Note the each....I want those pretty red ones Does anybody have any of those? I love red. But, I don't show. I just love my chicks. I told my daughter it was like a junkie finding their next fix when I got that call yesterday. My heart felt lighter, I got giddy and excitement filled me. This has really become a sickness....chicken addiction. Do they have a chicken addicts annomous? I need one.

JustAChickenLittle&More :

wimpy looks like a cochin to me?

Maybe part cochin part silkie? do cochins have that kind of comb?
I was confused by his comb since my last silkie had a black comb and wattles.

thanks for the advice on my new bird

i dont know if we will be keeping him since hes already started getting in fights with my girls (and losing) but i would at least like to see him through the end of him molt and help him get that comb healed up

You are there. Unfortunately you've come to the worst enablers group on the planet. It's sort of like going to an AA meeting where everyone chants: "Take that drink!......Take that drink!......Take that drink!"

The good thing about BYC is that we can supply you with unlimited excuses and rationalizations to justify your addiction to others. For instance, Chicken Math. That is the pseudo-science of adding up all your chickens and still coming out with at total of "only 10". It is diabolically simple. What I like best about this addiction is that it's more euphoric than alcohol, it lasts longer than chocolate, it's more calming than Prosac, and slightly less expensive than a full blown coke habit. You will lose some friends (they kind of glaze over when you start talking about your chickens) but they wouldn't understand the pure joy of them anyway. You will make lots more friends who are worse off than yourself and will make you feel better about having "only 10" chickens. My advice is to just relax and let the disease run it's course. Did I mention that one of the side effects is: you smile a lot?

If you want to talk to others worse off than yourself, check out the thread: "Chicken (poultry)Addiction Anonymous Official chat".

I have found most folks think I am crazy. But, I make them suffer through my chicken rants. And, yes, I told my husband I could be addicted to worse. After he thought about that, he was cool with my addiction! My daughter that is in South Korea says as long as they make me happy. She laughs because all she hears about is chickens. She says it is not her cup of tea, she perfers coffee. But, if it makes me happy, she will listen to me all day long! I really love my chicks. I want those red silkies. they are beautiful. But, each one has such a wonderful personality.
