Robin, is this the father of my babies?

Yes, he is. How are they doing in this heat?

I've been out half a dozen times hosing down the coops. Even the one with the AC.

You weren't kidding, he is beautiful!!! The heat has been hard on all the birds....I've been doing the same as you...only helps a lil thought when the index is 120 out....I think we're do some rain...

For the birds in the Dutch coop I soak down their outside pens. Some don't wait for me to turn the hose off before they come out on to the wet ground. I'm hoping tomorrow is cool enough to let the Silkies out, they're going stir crazy in there.

any way to just get multi colored chicks and adults out of just a pairing of silkies, or do they need multiple "suiters"? im wanting to maybe get a silkie roo in future for what think all three hens (ill get one egg one day, and two the next), or just sell and get one of another color, but unsure of what kinds to look at if i have all three white hens now, though like the black ones, but all neat colors except more white.. lol

Not sure if I quite understand.........it is past my bedtime lol

but if you want just mixed color birds, you can always pair blacks with your whites. No telling what is hidden by the white color. As explained in earlier posts, white is an OFF switch and hides patterns and other colors that may be in the bird's background.

So, you aren't sure if you have hens or not?

I did get a good giggle out of the "get one egg one day, two the next" - are your girls laying now? Mine sure are not on that schedule. Sometimes I get 4-6 eggs a day, sometimes I get 2 in one day, some days I get 0!

That's what I was thinking. The only 100% blue results come from Black x Splash breedings. What color are the hens you are breeding him to?

A black hen.

I didn't give him a second thought on color, thought he was black. Then seven chicks hatched, all blue. That's when I pulled back his feathers and thought . . . well, that's when I realized he wasn't black.

Robin,

Something wonky is going on with this all blue offspring...genetic miracle

Black + Blue gives blacks and blues but not all blue

Black + Splash gives you 100% blue

Blue + Blue gives blacks blues and splashes

Splash + Splash gives 100% splash

Black + Black gives 100% black

Also, that beetle green sheen is on black birds not blue. Blues will dull to gray or get brassy but never do they carry a green sheen.

Even if your boy is dark blue...the black hen makes it impossible for all blue babies.

You can get beetle green shine on blue birds. I've had it, and seen it on many others. It is not always present, but then it is not always present on blacks, either.

You can get 100% blues out of blue X black matings if you only hatch a few. The 50/50 is actually the chance each bird has of being blue or black. Hatch only a few, and the numbers are quite likely to be skewed. The more you hatch, the closer the overall percentages come to the predicted ones.
