Silkie thread!

Susanne at Huckleberry Farm! She has lovely birds, and lives close enough I was hoping for smooth shipping. Well, maybe not.

But, the chicks that hatch will be lovely I'm sure and with so many paints I ought to get a couple, right?

Two more white silkies hatched today! They are proving good brooder buddies to our first two guinea keets of the season. Can't get enough of these adorable babies!

Congrats!

Who did you get them from?

Oh well that might mean she will have to be seperated (with a buddy) cause we also got some Production Reds and from what I hear, they can be quite bossy. If they peck her too hard on her head, she could die couldn't she?

I have LF brahma and EE chicks in with my silkie chicks (all hatched together) almost all the silkie chicks are vaulted skulls - they have no issue. Raising them together as babies is great, trust me the silkies will probably be the bosses soon.

Could somone maybe post me some pictures of what the rosecomb and walnut combs look like? I can't seem to figure this out..?

I'm guessing that my pet rooster Curly here has the rosecomb which is bad, correct?

His comb (on yours) is really red, and it's shaped kind of odd. I have a picture of my cockerel-- granted, he's wet because he's getting a bath here--BUT it's a great picture of his face and comb since all his fluff is wet and pulled back. THIS is a walnut comb with the Mulberry color everyone is talking about. The red combs are not desirable.

This is my cockerel when he's dry and fluffed: You can still see that his comb is the right color and texture---- Sometime, I'm going to get a better picture of him when he's not all hunched over like this. He usually stands up straight with his chest out-- when he does that, he has NO back at all almost. It looks like his neck and tail come together. (I took this back when I first got him and he was a little freaked out)

THIS (Below) is a Rosecomb: Notice the red color and the points within the body of the comb... (BTW-- I just got eggs shipped to me of Black Rosecomb bantams! --which is the picture below) Anyway, if your comb looks like this.... not good.

From what I understand, the extra topknot is due to brain leakage, or rather a molera (hole in the skull like chihuahuas and newborn babies). Some of the brain comes up and is only covered by skin and feathers. (Chihuahuas don't do this - just silkies!!!!! ;-)
SO you need to be more careful with the vaulted skulled birds. The vaulted skulls do not make them any better or worse, and the crest won't necessarily be better just because of the raised tissue. Though they certainly tend to be more popular. Basically, you need to be more careful with your vaulted guy, and your non-vaulted silkies are no less as far as quality.
I am certainly no expert but this is what I have read here....
