Hi,
Your boy will be way to tense right now to give you anything. That is why you really need to work with him daily. When you go out to check on them in the morning, add to your routine to gently pick up your boy and work him as if you are going to do A.I. and get he himself into this routine. Then right before you would go to lock them up at night, you need to do this again with the rooster.

Yes technically it should be done in the morning when they have rested all night and at the crack of first light as we all have seen as chicken keeper with roosters, They waste no time getting to the ladies at first light!!!

But in all seriousiness now you do need him to get used to being handled and also when you hold him and are work his top, you need to kind use your hands holding him to rub and work his belly too. After a week of doing this you'll be amazed at how some of the boys actually get ready and look forward to this! lol

Remember alot of videos are out there to show how but, what you don't realize if they don't tell you is that cockrel has been worked with many many times so that they can show you a proper video with proper results.

Don't give up now and if you have a hard time with collection I would say to make sure that boy and a bare bum so you can really be sure to catch what you need and it doesn't go wasted

Okay, I was pretty disappointed. I just figured it would be a lot easier than that. The belly, too, hu? I had a hard enough time holding him and keeping him in my lap with his tail up and trying to hold a spoon... I can't imagine rubbing his belly too!

How in the world do you get all of that done?! ha!!

Oh, how disappointing!!

Maybe he's just a late bloomer. I thought my guy would never get the deed done. It was two weeks after I started getting fertile eggs that he ever crowed for the first time! That was last week!

Thanks, I was pretty bummed. My guy has been crowing for weeks and weeks... but is really not catching on with the breeding. He still grabs and stands on the ground or is on sideways. Sheesh!! My hen has picked up on her laying. She was laying an egg every 3 days. But now it's almost daily! I think it's the longer days with more sun. Thank goodness, now all I need is my boy to cooperate with me!

Can you afford to buy another roo while you're waiting on this one? Beth tells me she likes to have 3 or 4 roos of each color around. On a positive note. I have one chick out just now. It's from a paint egg but it looks black. Very healthy little guy! He's 12 hrs. early.

Congrats on your chick!! Could it turn out to be a paint anyway? Yeah, I can afford another roo, but it's my DH holding me back. He's not really into the chicken thing and is really humoring me right now. I would have bought another one by now, for sure! (I've been eye balling them!) I'd probably be better off buying some nice BBS eggs and just starting with chicks instead. Sigh. I guess I can give the AI another try today.

Hope it goes well for you! The chick will be a paint gene carrier.

I'm a huge fan of the Splash and the Paints are right up there at the top of my favorite color.

Are you going to try for Paints in the future? I think they would be really fun. If I do another color, I'd sure like to do the Columbian. Is that an official color for Silkies?? I know Silver Silkie had them, and I've seen them around, but rarely.

Me too!! We are waiting for 2 splash and I wish I had ordered 2 paints as well.

Yes, I'm hoping to breed paints. Neither paint nor columbian are standard silkie colors yet.
