Ok, so some day when I decide that I want to get more involved in the breeding of Silkies and possibly certain colors. Those beautiful porcelain and lavender silkies look like something I'd be interested in. And splashes. And buffs.

I guess I'm having a hard time picking just one favorite color.

Anyway. What would be a good start for the porcelains and lavenders? How do the genetics work?
I work with horses and I have been involved with some breeding and the color genetics seem to be much different compared to the chickens. Can't really begin to compare the two species.

I was thinking of starting with some new hens on my visit to my first poultry show and work from there on.

I am not very familiar with Porcelain but I know porcelain has the lavender genetics...So I'd got for say Lav roo and lav and porcelain hens and work from there. Lavender (Self blue) bred to Lav will give you only lavender chicks where as blue bred to blue will give you blue and splash chicks.

[ Take Two! ]

Today, as it is after midnight here, I am expecting silkie chicks once again! This time, I did candle the eggs, and they are fertile and making.

I'm a little confused as to why the first eggs weren't fertile and these are? I really hope Koda is the dad and not Cloud!

Thank you Country Chickens! They are 8 Wks, 7Wks and 6 Wks...
Ahh, Mama2my4 that's so sweet! You hen is very timely to lay today, and your daughter's face is just precious! Congrats to all of you!

Gambit, you half-grown birds are lovely! How old are they?

We are SO overjoyed!!! The Easter Chicken left us our very first egg this morning!!!

I know we are a little biased, but we think it is perfect!!
Picture perfect! Is that a Silkie egg? I'm so used to tiny Silkie eggs that regular eggs seem soo huge...
