Silkie thread!

so today i was outside with my pastries who will be turning 2 months on Thursday! and noticing their combs and how much they've changed... can anyone describe a young roo's comb? have pictures of one? ooo i hope all my pastries are girls i hate to have to part with anyone of them. two of them the porcelain and isabell have a flat wide light mulberryish color and the black one comb has more texture.... is it far too early for me to be freaking out yet? i plan to take pictures of them so maybe i'll try to get a close shot of their combs ::sigh:: crossing my fingers and praying for hens

Ok,,,,,so, either you were eating 2 month old Danishes, or "Pastries" is a nick-name for your Silkies??

I call mine "Slickies", and really have to watch myself when talking to people about them; the birds know who I mean!

Another thing I have noticed with chickens as well as with chicks. Sound. have you ever noticed when you talk, that they will shake their head? They have pretty good hearing. Is there some type of noise in the room that could be bothering them? Seeing as how they are doing it when you aren't talking, it may be something else they are hearing that is bothering them. Stop and think what kind of noises are going on in your room/home.

That is perfect! That is probably the best reason for the kids to be quiet I have heard in a long time! I will definitely have to give that a try and see if it makes any difference. There is usually always someone making noise, so I'll keep an eye on it and see.

I would be suspect of any 2 month old chick that has any red cast in their comb. I would be thinking boy. Sorry, hope I'm wrong.

lol yes yes i call my baby silkies pastries...their names are strudel muffin and biscuit... my older silkie & sizzle i call them my Puff-kins.... cause they are soo puffy

I don't know why people say that? By 4 months old, I can pretty much tell who is what. My boys started crowing at about 9 weeks, and were chasing the girls by 4 1/2 months! Pullets started laying by 5 months. I'm sure it may be different with different lines, but that's what I'm seeing here. Also, watch their posture and attitude, that's usually my first clue. The boys will be more upright and there may be some play-sparring going on with two or more boys. My girls all have a very rounded, fuller crest, and smaller and narrower dark combs. That said, I have also had pullets and hens that spar too!

so far no crowing just lots of peeping... so I'm trying my hardest to stay positive... i just can't help but noticing the differences . in fact out of all the three one little strudel is very small... only thing i can figure is that she was hatched latter then biscuit and muffin... she's always been the smallest... and the most active....

I have one tiny girl too, she always was. One of the more feisty of the bunch too! Look at the combs head on. I find here at an early age, the boys' combs are wider. Put all the hints together and you may have a better guess. Truthfully, I really love my boys the best! Can you not have roos there?

To those who have or have had hatchery Silkies:
When did your boys start to crow? I'm still a little uncertain about my special Bear. I'm thinking it's a he because his comb is larger than my two I'm sure are girls but smaller than my two definite boys. But this might be because he's got wry neck. Giving him Vitamin E and he gets better for a while but then relapses. I tried separating him but he wont drink from a plain dish and I'm using all my waterers somewhere else. Any suggestions??

these are my first silkie babies so i really don't have any to compare i got my puff-kins when they were older 3 months and so far no crow nugget should be laying any day ... and peaches will be 4 months on Friday ... nugget for sure looks like a girl all round and plump ...peaches is a little scrawny in her teenage phase... eek i hope peaches is a girl too...lol o my the waiting game....
