Silkie thread!

My daughter got to see 4 chicks hatch! She was thrilled. This morning we woke up to 3 new babies that hatched during the night, chipper little loveys. 6 gorgeous whites, 1 beautiful blue, we are still waiting on one black silkie egg to hatch. For some reason, I am feeling concerned about this last egg, no egg rolling or movement. I will be disappointed if the this one doesn't hatch, I was looking forward to a Black Beauty. They have FANTASTIC vaulted skulls. What a difference from my hatchery silkie. How long do I wait for that last egg to hatch before I give up on it? We are on day 22 right now and I did candle it quickly this morning, I didn't see any movement but like I said, it was quick. I don't have a good feeling...but we aren't giving up yet.

Today's Photos

Einstein was sleepy

Whats better than 1 silkie in a swing??? Two silkies in a swing!

Einstein looking girly.

Trinity loving some Einstein! (she's not burnt, she's very fair like her dad...face turns red in the heat)

Trinity thought the flower should go on top!

Love these photos, thanks for sharing! Certainly made me smile.

I am happy I got them, I am only worried about how attractive they are to dogs, this is why I originally ruled out silkies. I have a dog & yes she chases them if they are in their cage & fluttering around because they are excited or something. I love how docile they are they are Alma is the one with the more yellow head & she is a lover.

I have a question...I have a mix silkie.Had four but 3 got attacked and died.Im thinking about getting a few more so he has a buddy. But what if he attacks the lil ones???Is that good or bad and if so bad what do I do?I dont want to get them and right when they arrive they feel uncomfortable??

The chicks I hatched in April are around 11 weeks old now.
As some of you may remember, this is my first "real" year raising silkies.
I've had chickens for years, but I bought my first pair of silkies last year.

I'm having so much fun with all the babies! And I think I can tell I have some boys in the bunch.
I know it's hard to tell with silkies though.

So, should I be figuring out genders this early, or could it still go either way?

For example, I believe this splash chick is a boy.

And this one looks girly to me, but I'm guessing it could change?

Sorry this is blurry, used my iPhone. Trinity had Einstein up there on the roost. It is just a pine limb, then under it, I put a removable box (it is very heavy), but it can come out completely. It has about 2 inches of Sweet PDZ in it. Every night, they poop and poop and poop (apparently) and it goes into the litter box. In the morning when I go out, all the little poops are dried up. I take a kitty litter popper scooper and scoop it right out. SO far I haven't had to add anymore PDZ. If they ever poop on the rails, ledges or ramp I just sprinkle a little PDZ on it. Then it gets all hard and can be scraped off. I think it dries the ammonia out immediately. Those aren't little poops in the box, the birds make the bark fall off pine limb in the tray too!

Hi :) First, your daughter is a total doll! Love that smile. Second, thanks a bunch for the pic! I will have to give this a try. I used tree branches for my roosts too.

Alright! You have just got to quit with the adorable pics of the little girl with the silkies. It's breaking my heart! DH and I have not decided that we'll definitely be getting silkies but your pics make it soooo much harder to say no. lol

Fuzzybird adopted two of my 3 month old white silkies. I didnt realize how much Id miss them , But I know she will love them to death , plus I get to watch them grow up on the forum :)
