Silkie thread!

What kind of bedding are you using, newspaper by any chance? If it is a slippery surface like newspaper, they can't get a stable footing, and can end up with spraddle leg. Kind of odd for it to just come on now though, he is a bit older than those that usually get it. Does he act sick at all? You can make a leg brace for him with Vet Wrap and give him some Poly Vi-Sol vitamins (no iron type), and see if that doesn't help
Newspaper yes but it is shreaded up very thinly so not sure if it would be slipery, the other chicks i bought with it were snezeing and gasping so i have had some anitboiots in there water i was wondering if maybe it was not drinking and became dehdrated? i gave it some suger water and it realy drak it up but still just sitting with head down but now with one leg bent and the other out stright. i will try the hair band idea and see if it helps

I have some questions about breeding with Silkie's. If everyone could put a input in that would be great thank you all.

I wanted to know how people make the buff color in Silkie's and how the make the splash color and lavender color. Next question how do you make a Sizzle? I have different colors of the silkie's and different colors of frizzle cochin bantams also have bantam frizzle polish to work with. I have tons of bantam polish colored chicken to. I have a lot of different breeds of bantams and standard chickens. I would like to make a few projects for myself to do. Please fill me in on how to do so and what you guys all think on your own type of mixing you have done or even what you want to do or even what you think might be really cool to try. I wanted to play around on paper first and get other peoples thoughts and ideas from other people before even doing so first. Thank you all again! Everyone please join in and play!
START with good quality colors to begin with. Buy a Buff pair, and a splash/blue pair, etc. Do NOT cross your colors and breed --for example-- White to anything else but white... same with your buff and splash--- don't breed them with anything but their own color. The work has been done for you, what you can do is create your own breeding program that does NOT breed split wing, leakage, extra toes and other faults and strive to breed the best you can. Be picky. Don't just breed something because you have it. I have plenty of birds here that I will never breed-- ever. If they are female, they get tossed into my layer pen (separate from my other birds). If they are roosters, they get sold (and unfortunately, I've got someone coming to buy a couple of my roosters and I'm sure they are going to eat them). But they are worthless to breed, they are a very bad example of what a silkie is. And honestly, if they are going to eat them, at least those genes won't be bred later on. Start researching here and on the web who is showing and breeding and creating very nice birds themselves and see what you can buy from them. That is how I started off. This is our first year showing, and that makes a big difference. You learn a lot just by going to shows and seeing what you are up against and what you are striving for.

just bought a silkie chick a week a go now it is spradle legged or somtheing is there someting i can do to help it?

i can't stant up just sits like this.
Yeah, he looks like he might have spraddle leg. Use the bandaide technique on him. BUT--- here's the thing, his head is down and his body seems rear heavy. I've had two of these chicks hatch this year alone. They usually end up dying. I think there is actually something wrong with their bellies/rears. Like in the digestion or something. Possibly even a tumor or unabsorbed yolk. Something that makes them bottom heavy. Then because they keep falling back, their legs splay out like that. So while it looks like he has spraddle... I'm going to vote there is something internally wrong with him.

t took about 20 years from the beginning to get lavender (self blue) recognized in the standard. Sizzles that are a number of generations into development are a still project. Better to get some that are already well on their way than to start again. It would be almost as hard as starting to re-create showgirls.
X2 Don't reinvent the wheel! My favorite project color is the Columbian color-- BUT I'm certainly not going to try to re-create that, but "buy in".

Then you have several generations behind you that the work has been done.

ahhhh-- get rid of the newpaper. Use a nice thick layer of pine chips.

That looks more like crookneck than spraddle. Get some baby vitamins into the chicklet.
oh, good idea!!! The spraddle does look like a side effect of some other problem.
