Silkie thread!

I feel the same....I am trying to find out how I can keep 4 colors outside without my neighbors or the city giving me grief. It's so tempting to try and keep them in the basement. I love chicks, too, and miss my little mutts, but I have lot's of Silkie eggs that will hopefully be hatching in 3 weeks. Oh, how will I ever keep the roosters quiet???

I have one banty rooster who is semi loud, but no one has complained, thank the Lord....I am planning on selling that pair when the Silkies are old enough to crow....What to do, what to do? Anyone have a way to buffer the noise?

Some times neighbors will tolerate the noise if you keep the roos locked in the dark til 9:00 AM or so, but silkie roos can be just as loud as large fowl.

Once my boys start to crow I've actually considered keeping them in the garage every night and just letting them out during the day, but then the crowing begins at 5 AM right underneath my bedroom... Not the best conditions for getting a full night's rest! We'll see just how loud these Silkie boys are. I don't want to ruffle any of my city neighbors feathers.

Too bad the boys can't just text the rest of the flock - "Hey it's morning - get up y'all!"

I just ordered some Catdance eggs!!

This is the first time I'll be trying my luck with ordered eggs. So far I've been hatching my own eggs. But! Time for an upgrade!! lol I've decided to get rid of some of the PQ birds to make room for our Catdance chicks. Hope lots of them hatch and we get lots of nice little chickies.

I'm so excited!! Eggs should be here Wednesday and the hens are ready to sit on more. lol

I have hatched out Catdance Silkie eggs before (I live within driving distance) and the silkies were absolutely gorgeous with very good dispositions. We sold them unfortunately and now I want more. But DH said no for now. :(

I had to put in a good word for her as she has very good silkies IMO.

Finishing up my Silkie Coop this weekend. My babies will be 8 weeks old this Sunday and I guess it's time to move them outside. I'm going to miss them! It's been so much fun to grab them out of the brooder in the house and snuggle with them. I love the way they settle in and sing and coo while we hold them. I hope they'll still be as friendly after I move them into their new digs.
It's tempting to keep them in the house with me but I suppose that would be wrong. They truly are chickens and not beanie babies after all...

Oh... but then they'll get bigger and one day will be broody and I can order more Silkie eggs for them to hatch and then I'll have a whole new bumper crop of babies to play with...

I do love my layer flock, but who thought I'd ever be this crazy about a bunch of soft, sweet, fuzzy little chickens? Thank goodness for this thread. I know I'm not the only one off my rocker!
I always feel the same way when my silkies get around 8 weeks old....bittersweet about them growing up! I LOVE all the sweet cooing noises they make when they are babies too. It's like having the morning song-birds in the house -all day!

Don't worry, they'll stay sweet.

I only have 8 BBS silkies left right now that I keep in a special silkie coop and yard. They literally throng me when I walk through their gate and some stay at my feet waiting for their turn to be picked up and held. I keep little stools to sit on in their yard to get my daily doses of chicken therapy! This group is made up of 4 and 5 month old silkies. It is SO tempting to pick up more fertile silkie eggs.

I would love to see those who are breeders their color breeding pens. I am trying to get some ideas for early next year. I have a coop for all my silkies but when I build up a good bq stock of the 4 colors I would either like to be able to take the colors out that I want to breed at the time. I dont neccessarily have to have them all seperate permently. My son wants to breed his polish, so we would share the divided breeding pens. Hope that is easy to understand. The area I want would have minium 4 pens which I could take 2 colors and my son could take 2 colors breed them a little, collect the eggs and then return to the flock, but that brings on the probably of reestablishin pecking order. I really dont have the room to build 8 different breeding pens.

Anyway I would love to see others just to give me some insight and design ideas.

Still trying to figure all this out and didn't hit quote when replying to Janine718 :(
How about Romeo and Juliet?

Here are my babies they are just 2 months old they grew so fast! The one on the left is no doubt a rooster and the right is my girl. I am renaming them have to think of some cute duo names lol! I am so in love they have such personalities. This is a picture after they followed us for their mealworms.

I'm hoping ya'all can help me with another round of "Name that Gender".... Since I'm so challenged when it comes to loading pix I'll do this in 2 separate posts...

Both of these cuties were hatched in March. This first one has the rounder POOF on it's head and the second post's chicklet has one that seems to be more square?? No signs of combs anywhere...but I'm gunshy since the last one I thought didn't have a comb and was for sure a hen sprung up this mulberry comb and crowed in (what seemed like) overnight!

Sorry the pic quality is so bad...soooooo hot and I dreaded going out again for another round....
