Will some one post a picture of a SQ non bearded white silkie? I think mine *might* end up being SQ but I'm not sure.

I jut got my first silke chick and she seems to be not growing I have her on sulfadimethaxine now and she is active and eats well . i have a serama hen acting as broodie for her and she is on a medicated feed I was given as the feed she was eating. the other chicks from the same batch are about 2-3 times her size. her stools are normal and her activity level and appetite are good but she does feel thin to me also. She seems to want lots of protein is there anything Different about silkie care I am missing ? I wasn't given any special instruction. I gave her supervised free range and she was hunting bugs like crazy paying no attention to greens or grains or any other foods . I gave her a pert of a cherry and she ran to it but then tossed it aside as if she was disgusted it was fruit and not meat. any tips on getting this kid to grow or do you think she may be from a different line or breed of silkie like bantam cochin instead of standard? Miss Buffy Lizardfoot we lost her frizzle cochin bud Fluffy Slipper 24 hrs in.

That drug is an antibiotic and can be used for cocci-- but unless it is ill and fluffed out and not eating, I wouldn't drug the chick at all. If you are feeding a medicated chick feed, that would be taking care of cocci anyway. Unless it was fluffed out and obviously stressing and in trouble. Otherwise, if it is active and alert, stick with the chick starter and leave it at that. These birds are not heavy weights. You will often be able to feel the keel bone on them and they should stay light weight.

Silkie Fliers- We've got 4 and they're nearly identical. One had an issue with his toes curling inward but it seems to be naturally resolving itself and he's walking great now.

Pretty pattern.... were they supposed to have silkie feathers, though?

Hello! I was wondering if any silkie show people could help me. I have never shown any of my chickens before, but, the county fair is coming up in August, and there is going to be a chicken show. It is a very small fair, and last year the chicken show was very small. I figure this year I'm going to give it a try. I have nothing to lose after all Anyway, there are three classes. Meat birds, egg layers, and fancy feathers. You can only enter one bird per category. i have two silkies that I'd like to take, but I can only take one. Please can you offer any criticism on either of them. I know they're not perfect show birds, but I think that my little county fair chicken show would be fun, and I'd like to participate. The ones to chose from are the buff hen (the roo is just getting over a case of wry neck), or the dark blue pullet. The splash hen has a sixth toe on one foot, and is moulting. Which one would you take, and why?

I would want a close up of the bird and a good shot of how well feathered their feet are. Try framing the whole bird in the shot up tight for better evaluation.

It's too hard to see them well. The blue does *seem* to have a larger crest. Either way, have a great time at your fair! Why can't you just take them both??? We take several birds to a show. Then you don't have to choose and you never know what might appeal to the judge.

Hi all! I'm so bummed! I only had one egg hatch out from my last shipment of eggs and this little guy has a severely splayed leg, with hip involvement. I've Vetwrapped him all up and now I'm just praying for it to straighten. This is the 3rd splayed chick that I've hatched from 3 separate shipments. Does anyone have any ideas as to what makes this happen???? Are silkies more prone to being splayed? I'm so gun-shy about hatching now, although the only hen that I have that is old enough to go broody just finished up with her last batch. And I would LOVE to introduce some splash into my flock! So discouraging...I'm using a Hova bator 1588 with a fan, if that may be the problem?

OKay, there has been some discussion on other threads about this. Try hatching with a rubber shelf mat in there. Better grip for their feet. I bought the rubber shelf liner at Walmart in the homegoods section.

Post a picture of her! But take a tight photo of her so we can really see her shape.

Also, if you take it in diffused lighting, it's easier to see true color, and makes it easier to see if her color is clear. (not direct sunlight-- that will cast shadows and distort color) I like to take pictures in early morning or late evening when the colors show up better.

Are you sure this bird is 3 months old? It looks like it's 6-8 weeks old. It also doesn't look like a black. Most likely this is a Blue, and it looks like it either has gold leakage under the beak, or it's the lighter grey showing thru. Anyway, for now, favoring more of a girl look... but that could change the older it gets. I'd say this bird is really too young to know.

Now, I realize they all grow at different rates, so if you hatched it and you show 3 months, then totally fine. I have a couple of birds right now that are "runts"-- they are teeny tiny!!! They are nearly 3 months old and still look like they are 5-6 weeks old! It's insane. Anyway, it's a cute little bird you have there.
