Silkie thread!

Hi,

We are first time chicken owners. We have bought our first two silkies and are very happy (or at least we thought we were). Having been watching the chickens closer today we are a little concerned that one of them may be a rooster. They are supposedly 20 weeks old. The chickens interact differently and there is a visual difference between the two of them. The one we suspect may be a rooster has normal tail feathers. Can someone please confirm if the chicken on the right in the following photo is a rooster?

We live in suburban Melbourne, Australia and roosters do not go down well with neighbors unfortunately.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Definitely a boy. Sorry. :(

I have a batnam silky rooster by the name facnypants. We bought him just yesterday along with two other silkies. the pair are both Splashed silkies. They came with a very young silkie. my 5 year old cousin named him Tristan. we have yet to name the splash silkies. But fancypants is the cutest thing ever. He loves being held like a baby and must have all the attention from me. Can someone tell me what you would call his color?

Okay snapped a few pics. Sorry they are blurry....I tried to take a few more but my battery died. This is the pullet who is losing her crest feathers. Normal? or something to worry about?

Camera is charging, so I should be able to get better pics later. I can see the follicles (not sure if that is the right word) where the feathers used to be. She looks like a hot mess.

If you are talking about the bird in your avatar, it is buff. It looks like he has some black feathers which is undesirable in buff but certainly doesn't hurt him at all for a beautiful pet. :)

4Hchickmama: I can't tell by your pictures, and I am new to silkies, but in my other chickens, bald head means she's the roo's favorite, spelled s-e-x, if you get my drift. I don't know why, but my last 2 roos have just one hen that they like to grab by the head feathers until they are bald. Maddening, since although they make hensaddles, I've yet to see a cowboy hat to match, lol.

Thanks for putting me at ease, Hawkeye - I've just never had such little babies, one of the EE's died w/o pipping after chirping all day, then I got on here and was seeing all sorts of "omg, my silkie chicks are dying!!!!!" posts and it kind of freaked me out. I swear the little boogers are nearly twice as big today as they were Thursday when they hatched! I've got to set up a photo shoot soon ;) Hatching in summer is soooo much easier than February-March, just glad they didn't try during the 100's weeks!

I have no roosters...so that can't be it. I bathed her because she did have some sticky bits in there from strawberries and watermelon...and I noticed it was her chin as well. Shes just...going bald. No buggies that I can see either. -sigh-
