Their sizzle father. He has the proper features of a silkie, but when bred back to a silkie - I have yet to get frizzled feathers. I bred him to a polish hen and got what you see above. Some have darker skin than others.

Will a silkie be sad if she is the only silkie in a flock? I have a small flock that is growing, was planning on adopting a silkie and an ameraucana (sp??) bantam. Both of these chickens are from the same flock, but I have NO silkies at home. I've been doing some research, and finding out that they like to be with other silkies, and don't roost with the other birds. Wondering if this sweet silkie would be better off going somewhere with more than one? My kids are in love with her and really want me to take her along with the other bantam.

Currently I have a Polish at home and some sort of EE pullet. They are both standard size chicks. Looking to add some more girls before winter comes, just don't want a sad silkie on my hands. Currently, the flock she is in has other silkies so she is used to being around them.

I am new to chicken-hood any info you could provide me with would be soooo appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a Silkie chick that is growing up with a batch of Serama chicks. I needed to do that as she is an 'only' and the other Silkie chicks are much older and she can not be put with them until she gets older/bigger.

The, unexpected, result is that she is MUCH more confident, than the other Silkie chicks. The boldness of the Serama's is teaching her to be that way too. She climbs over everything, roosts, nothing fazes her. LOVE THAT!!!

My other Silkie chicks, right now, are air heads and scare easily. If you put anything new, in their Brooder, they act like it is going to eat them and they cluster as far away from it as possible. Not so with my 'only' Silkie. Put something new in and she is climbing all over it or checking it out in moments.

Wish that I could always raise my Silkies with Serama's now!!

Sheila :)

No reason you can't! :)

I raise my silkies with larger breeds when I don't have a broody available. I usually stick my silkie chicks with broodies.

My frilkie was raised with huge cochin x barred rocks and has an attitude like them. He would roost if he could, but he can't see very well

some pics from today...here is my splash (Charolette) I am thinking of taking to a show in Sept...and Ginger...the orange frosting girl

All of them are absolutely gorgeous. Love the Orangesciles and the partridge of course I'm biased...the orange frosted remind of me my Sherbert. LOL

Great photos of your beauties!!

good advice...sour crop is a strange illness and I had two LF girls get it a couple years ago...I even took one to the vet and they drained her crop ect, special diet...it worked for a few weeks but I ended up losing them

I was told it could be a secondary symptom of something else wrong ....? I hope she gets better soon..
So what is this sour crop that people are talking about?
big_smile.png
What exactly are the symptoms and what should you look for incase one of your birds has this?

This one is great!
