RockerHen ~ Little Hen is adorable. I just love the big fluffiness of Silkies and the white just seem to look fabulous. Congrats.little hen![]()
Oh Basel your "boy" is gorgeous. His tail is absolutely heavenly. He'd be a keeper in my coop. Here are pictures of my 4 month old boy. Any critiques? He is SO sweet. Do you think he's a keeper? [Sorry his feet are dirty. We just had a hurricane!]![]()
So it has now been 4-5 weeks since he started trying to crow. He still sounds pathetic and it sounds like "eh eh eh...". LOL. It's not getting better. He also walks with a low chest and never chest butts with the other youngsters. Kind of runs from them. What do you think of that?
Look at that pile of goodness!!! That's funny because I can't keep my chickens and chicks in. They can't wait for the coop door and the brooder door to open so they can go free range. Even when it got cold and was windy they stayed out and I tried to shoo them inside but they would have nothing to do with it. They do have a mind of their own don't they? Thanks everyone for complimenting my girl. I think she's quite cute myself![]()
Does anyone else's silkies want to stay in the coop ALL day? It's not even windy or cold here, it was close to 70 today, but they spent almost all day inside their 'pile' house, even though I had the gate open for them to free range if they wanted to. They just spent all day preening and sleeping snuggled up to each other.
Hey everyone. I am new to chickens and have a few questions I was wondering if you could help me with. First I will tell you a little info on my chicks.. I have three chicks that were hatched on Oct. 1. I was told one parent is a Silkie, and the other parent is a Frizzled Cochin. They all have five toes, feathers on their feet, black eyes, skin, and beak (although the white one has more of a charcoal grey skin color and they have yellow on the tip of the beak). They are all from the same parents, and I was told that their colors are black, grey, and white. I am assuming they are all girls for now. The black one is named Lois, the white one is Leela, and the grey one is Peggy. Now for my questions.. I will post the pictures after my questions. I apologize in advanced if I don't say the correct term for things. I am still learning![]()
1. What are their colors actually called? The white one has started devoloping parts of dark grey on top of her head, and in some feathers. The black one has started to get white on the front of her neck. I was just curious as to what you guys thought their colors may be.
I agree with those who have already committed about two splash and one black or blue.
2. A few days ago I noticed this blue on their skin and base of feathers. They have shoulder blade poofs as I call them, and if i move it to the side, it is bright blue. Same as the base of their feathers on their wings. Is this normal?
That blue is bright. I have no idea on this subject. Hope someone else can answer this for you.
3. If one or two, or all for that matter, turn out to be roos, can I keep them together? Or will I need to keep them seperate? If only one turns out to be a roo, could I get him another as a friend? I am going to be keeping all three no matter what gender they may be.
I also agree with the others about 1 roo 2 hens being okay but that 2 roos and 1 hen would be a trainwreck. Poor hen, just saying.
4. This question is related to number 3.. If only one is a roo, could I just keep him with the girls if I collect the eggs every day? I was told that I could keep him with them, however he will mess up their feathers when he latches on to try and mate.. Is this true? I just have 1 roo and he has 5 hens (lucky guy). He has just started his mating dance/attack, lol. I can see how their feathers will get messed up, geessshhh!
All that being said...Your silkies are beautiful and you will love them more and more each day. I particularly love PEGGY!![]()
Cute babies!!! So you have "sizzles"looks like one black and 2 splash, one darker than the other. I have one Sizzle and she is a splash and so cute. I understand they are hard to sex.. even harder than silkies
Mine seems to be a girl... no comb and exhibits no rooster behavior but also hasnt got to the crow or lay an egg point. Mine is a bit under five months old now. Seems to see less well that the silkies but that makes her easy to catch. This is "Dahlia"
Dahlia is the BOMB!!! What a beautiful girl.![]()
Had a good weekend with 2 of our girls in Frederick MD. Our blue girl Princess Fluffy went BV and our splash girl Hope went RV. Both girls are only 5mo and sure have started their show careers with a nice first weekend out.
So proud of my two young girls..
So beautiful and they sure do have a great show career in front of them.
Wow! So many beautiful birds on this thread. Can I just say something about this thread? Ahem...I have to say, that as long, and as many times I have come on here, I have seen nothing but nice comments, helpful comments, folks coplimenting one another on their hatches, their new live arrivals. Everyone makes them feel like they have the prettiest and cutest chicken in the whole wide world..well, we do..they are Silkies after all.The only time I see someone comment on whether their chicken is show quality or not, is if it has been asked. Well done Silkie lovers! I have been to threads where folks are doing fine on the thread, chatting along, and here comes someone to stir up confusion in what has been said. They..knew the way it was, or is. Had to argue the point every time a comment was made. It's so fun to come on here and just read the compliments, and see the beautiful birds that are posted. Thanks for posting!![]()
Agreed! I have received wonderful help whenever I have needed it. In fact, I have developed a great internet friendship with a couple of peeps on here.![]()
My new friend for my silkie girls, hoping this rooster is quieter than the last! Woman I bought him from says he hasn't started crowing yet, but he's 5 months. He was SO gross and I think he had lice so he got a flea bath and a good scrubbing!
So what cha going to name him? He is so adorable, if I can say that about a "he". Love everything about him.![]()
just hatched out my first chicks from my own stock got some cool colors was wondering what you would call them, I belive the first is partridge but the second is almost choclate brown colored. Thanks!
Ahhhh what a couple of cuties!
Love them both but that darker one is super cute. Not sure on color but someone more knowledgeable will chime in I'm sure. Congrats on your own stock hatching.
I'm gonna say breed her to black. But I may be wrong so someone else should chime it.i am so excited and need some advice so i found out my white silkie hen was hiding some recessive paint because she hatched me out a chick that has a few black dots on her i need help how do i develop the paint better and make more black dots on her by breeding? thanx
