Silkie thread!

I went to the feed store today with my kids and my oldest son always wants to go see the chickens and ducks (like we don't have any at home

). Anyway, they accept a lot of roosters from people who don't want them or can't keep them. I always see hatchery silkies but this time one caught my eye (he is obviously not from hatchery.) He seems very young, and looks nice especially his feet... a lot of feathers. His wings seems ok, I like his crest too, but I need you guys advice. I have 6 white chicks under one month, and a dozen of white eggs on the way, so i am going to have some roo in a few months to choose from lol. I just don't want miss an opportunity with the guy lol. They sell him for $15. What do you think about him (he is quite dirty)? Is he worthy to get him?

I'd say yes. You always have the option of taking him back to the feed store or selling him if you don't need him later on, right? You have a gut feeling but you are questioning it, go with your gut!

That's what I did with my newest addition

went with my gut! He's gorgeous but just started crowing tonight so I just spent the last hour trying to build a door onto my coop in the dark haha so now if I can't hear him inside the house from inside the coop i'll be all set.

He's looks pretty nice. For $15, why not? Grow him out, see what you have on your hands. Double check his left wing...make sure it's not slipped. Not a bad find if that wing is good.

This is my splash hen and my first hatch of chicks. She was one of my roosters favorites and also needed a trim since she got sticky after a watermelon treat, so excuse her messy crest. She actually lays on top of the feeder even if I move it. I guess she doesn't want them out of her sight to go for a snack. She is a great momma. Now to find homes for all these lil ones, ok maybe I will keep one :)

Wow! I think he's nice! But, I'm a newbie, so you can't go by my impressions. I think he's a lovely find.
Me too I am a newbie but from what I have learned(please correct me if I am wrong) Round crest good, tight wings good, nice feathering good, nice feathering at feet, right amount of toes, nice tail set. I think it looks good :)

We lost our buff rooster to a falcon saturday so sunday we picked up a new rooster. He is still young but we think is going to be a great rooster to breed. He is a blue splash. And he is much nicer then the last rooster. He still has pin feathers growing so he is not fully feathered but he is looking really cool.

about your rooster. I'm glad you have a new roo to love on.

Thank you for adding this!

quick question, if I put a door on my coop tonight (an old dog house, 4x4x3) will they have enough air? There is another door on the side as well but I don't have anything to make ventilation holes really but I have to put a door on so I can keep my rooster INSIDE! He just started trying to crow and I really don't want to have to sell him.

btw I have 2 silkie hens and a young polish cockerel.
Well there are a whole lot of variables there. Does the dog house roof sit flush with the bottom or is there a space between where the roof joins to allow air to flow through?

YES! WHAT A PRETTY CREST HE HAS. MAKE A BEELINE BACK TO THAT FEED STORE :)

It is a gable roof, so there is a space. The door I quickly put on last night has a little space for air to come in so I didn't worry too much about it. I didn't hear him crowing this morning so either he did and it worked to keep the noise down or he didn't and I won't know until he does.

Had a good weekend with 2 of our girls in Frederick MD. Our blue girl Princess Fluffy went BV and our splash girl Hope went RV. Both girls are only 5mo and sure have started their show careers with a nice first weekend out.

So proud of my two young girls.. :)
Congratulation !!! they are beautiful
