Silkie thread!

I think any of us here that has ever lost a chicken understands. They aren't just chickens, they are little love bugs that give you as much love as any other pet member of the family. He was a beauty that's for sure. How old was he Poulettes, did you have him all his life?
He was young... 8 months. He must have eaten something bad.... but what??? No clue.
It depends on the hen colors. My girls are blue and splash so I like to use blue so I get all three colors.
Same here. I have a lot of blue and splash, so I will get a blue roo. Now I just hope one of my chicks roo will turn out nice.

Thank you for all the nice comments.
The two pictures I posted yesterday of Maxime were the two last ones because I found him dead this morning!!!!!
I am really upset and sad!! :hit
I loved that rooster, I miss his crowing, it's so quiet now.

Yesterday night when it was time to go back to the coop, he was the only one laying under the bird of paradise (I posted the pic), I thought something was going on because if was very tame and quiet, but didn't think he was going to die during the night.
I don't know if he ate something wrong or had a heart attack... I just hope it won't happen to my girls!

Oh, I am so sorry. You are such a caring person and I can't believe this happened. My thoughts are with you. Tina

Tonight it broke my heart when my 4 year old son look at the sky and asked to Santa Claus if he could bring Maxime back. It was so sad!
How are your babies? Do you see any improvement?

A friend of mine hatched out some of the first silkie eggs from me. She lost a lot to a predator, but Chippie remains. He is handsome.. I'm going to have to go steal him for Phyllis

Chippie just says FALL with all his beautiful colors. Look at those chickens with their heads buried in the leaves, haha

I can't imagine the sorrow. I have lost dogs due to old age but not something so young and your poor son bless his heart. That's so scary not knowing what happened. I know there are certain foods they aren't supposed to have but are there plants that if they ingested the leaves it could make them sick or die? Hoping you find some peace during this difficult time. Cindy

Just got a lavender pullet (fingers  crossed )  what color should I breed her to and what colors do you breed to get lavenders? thanks a bunch
It's more than just mixing colours.

Also, it's actually called Self Blue. :) Just thought I'd share that.

I would breed her to a Self Blue male. Though I don't work with that colour at all.

Because self-blue (lavender) is such a new color, most of them are still very lacking in type. To improve type and color most breeders are using quality blacks. The babies will be black but split to lav. Then you breed her to one of her babies. The lav gene will not outwardly effect the black color. You would see it so you much keep careful breeding records. Below is a chart to show the different crosses. It is important to note that if you breed black split to lav to each other you won't know which of the resulting black chicks are carrying the lav gene.

LAVENDER (SELF-BLUE)
Lav x lav = 100% lav

Lav x split lav = 50% lav, 50% split

Split x split = 25% lav, 50% split, 25% non lav

Split x non lav = 50% split, 50% non lav

lav x non lav = 100% split
