Silkie versus Polish

My hens weight less than my roo, but he is a pretty tall and hefty boy. Still, even at 4 pounds, that is a lot more than a bantam and a Silkie in weight and they are still about 2 feet tall, which is a LOT taller than a Silkie.

Good point. I thought since everyone says they get picked on in mixed flocks that the weight might even things out a bit. I really would prefer to stick with bantams.

That being picked on is not true around here. I have Silkies, d'Uccles, bantam Hamburgs and large fowl running around here. Other than the large fowl bullying their way in for treats there is no untoward bullying going on.

My silkies are much more likely to bully my large fowl than the other way round.

I've known a LOT of hatchery based Polish to weigh that little. Hatchery stock of any breed naturally is smaller, skinnier, and/or lighter. I'd say about half the people out there with Polish have hatchery based birds. Even most of my hens are - However my girls I chose to keep with a good weight and meaty body in mind.

I have to say go with Polish, only because silkies are U-gly! LOl, my Polish hens were always small too but the roos quite a bit larger. I never had a agressive Polish roo even with all the Polish that I had. I now have some Polish roos in the yard and some half/Polish. The half/Polish definitely rule the yard chasing the pure Polish away whenever they see them.

I like my silkies okay....but I LOVE my polish. They are so funny and personable. I have three GL polish hens and a tolbunt pair. The tolbunts are HUGE and have not matured yet. The GL polish are a bit smaller and the silkies are the smallest although the rooster doesn't seem to realize they are all bigger than him!

All birds are different I don't like polish because in my experince polish have been flighty and high strung! Silkies are one of my 2 fav. breeds they are very sweet my rooster is a big baby when it comes to lov'in jumps in my lap puts he's head on my arm and goes to sleep but is a great protecter and treat finder for his girls and is super nice to our little kids! I would get two silkies!

Happy-Hens
