Silkie won't go broody

Do not worry! I've had them brood and hatch in the dead of winter. It is amazing.

She just needs a nice, dry nest out of weather and draft. Let her be momma. The babes will hatch fine as long as she sets.

The first few days to a week, you won't see much of the chicks as they stay hunkered under her...but within sometimes as early as 3 days, she has them up and scratching in the cold dirt.

As long as they have ready access to her for warm ups...ie they can't strand themselves through fence gaps or nooks, they will be fine.

They run around in their little down jackets with warm ups with mom.

They will grow fast, feather fast, and usually are laying by early summer even late spring.

It is amazing.

See photo of one of my winter hatches...I usually do one in December or January with my Willie or Batman Cochin....there are about 4 or 5 littles running around in the run with co-mommas
