But why is the mom under a heat lamp? Their mother is supposed to keep them warm.

I read in one of my books that silkie X wyandotte chicks are some of the best mothers in all the chicken world! Can't wait to see the babies as they grow older!

Thanks. There are 4 all together and they all look pretty much the same. Hoping for all or mostly females!
I have a heat lamp on them because it's been in the low 30's here at night. The silkie was sitting on 9 full size eggs and couldn't keep them all covered and was giving up after 3 hatched and then luckily one more hatched a couple of days later. They can go to the other side to get out of the heat but seem to like it.

Wow! I have to say, but that is one cute chick you have there. It's feathers are beautiful, I can't wait to see what they will look like when they get older.
