I recently rescued four "silkies" from a lady that could not care for them any more after raising them from biddies. They are 4-5 months. Two have head feathers like a silkie the other two like the one pictured. Is this a crossed bird?
TIA

It's possible that they could be hatchery quality silkies. Hatcheries tend to breed for quantity, so their chicks don't always look quite like they're supposed to. Or they might actually be mixed with something. It's hard to say. The one in the picture is super cute btw :D

I'm not a betting man, but bet they were purchased at TSC. Poor hatchery quality silkies.
Probably so. I didn't get that information from her. So, follow-up question. Is there a way to tell the cockerels from the pullets without the tuft of hair besides just waiting for an egg or a crow? I believe all four of them to be cockerels but the two that look like the one pictured I'm unsure of because they are missing a couple of the distinct qualities that a well-bred silkie would have.
