I set four silkie eggs under a broody and she hatched all four. I set 22 eggs in my Brinsea and 15 hatched. Why can't the results be the same?! :he Broodies are better, IMO, but I like being able to do it myself in the bator.

Well I put 30 into the incubator, but there are 8 that proved infertile or non viable.
Most of those were from the first week my silkies layed. A couple were shipped.
I bet if you put 6 shipped eggs under the same broody you wouldn't get 100%.
 
The chick that hatched under the pigeon was a hen's first-week-of-laying egg.

Probably right. Still, though. The broodies know what to do exactly and have the exact right temp and humidity for the eggs.
I noticed during the four eggs' incubation, they felt a great deal lighter than the artificial incubated eggs.
 
I Never candle broody eggs. I only held them because I was putting fresh hay in the boxes and trying to keep the hen in her rightful box. The four eggs that were under her are my little raptors now. :gig they're so cute.
My best broody that I've ever had would be my white silkie from someone local. I love her to pieces but I think she's getting old. :( she still lays several eggs a week tho. My white silkie hen from Meyer has gone broody twice. She raised 3 chicks the first time. Th second one I broke because I have no need for more chicks. You'll have more broody silkies than you'll want. Trust me. They're very persistent.
 
I want 12 hatches a year - I only have 2 silkies far so I need more. They are cheaper to run than the incubator and brooder. I just hope I can get a good acceptance of baby chicks - I'm not sure how my RIR will go with youngsters around.
 
Agreed. Broodies are easier and cheaper.

I keep all my silkies and pigeons in one coop. Everyone is very accepting of newbies. My raptors I still have in the nursery/hutchpital. Once I get rid of half my silkies I will let them graduate to the coop.

i caught Laura Ingalls eating blueberries off the bush! It was so funny. She was hopping like 1 foot to get to the berries

The rest were there when I start letting the RIR out to free range with them at about 5 days old. It's just she seem more assertive than the others and possibly agressive.
