Help.! I’m a first time chicken owner & I know silkies aresuper hard to sex & some say you won’t even know the sex till they lay an egg or crow, but I was wondering if anyone could possibly tell their sex now by seeing the pictures of them. They don’t crow both have really soft chirps I seen a video of 12 week old silkies and they were crowing so I played the video next to them seeing how they’d react hoping they’d maybe try to crow & they didn’t. I still play it a few times a week seeing if they’ll attempt to crow but nothing yet I know they could be maturing slowly. I just can’t have a rooster where I live & Eddie (the black one I think is a rooster) is my baby he/she is more attached to me than Regina George (the grey one) is. Here’s some pictures of my babies I hope & pray they’re both hens & if not hopefully I can know so I can start finding a home for them because they’re pets not food & I want them in a home who will love them & take care of them play with them like I do, that’s most important their well-being if they are roosters & I can’t keep them. Thank you guys.!

How old are they? I think the black one is a cockerel, but it has a single comb, which confuses things a bit. And the gray one is too close to call. So maybe try in another week or two. And try to get clear close ups of the combs.

Congrats on your birds! It’s so exciting, isn’t it :D
I have a small flock of silkies myself and I love them.
It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but I’d say the one with the slicked back crest is definitely a cockeral. The other one I’m leaning towards hen, but it’s hard to tell. Male silkies are usually a lot more friendly than the hens, so Eddie probably is a rooster.

Pic 2, I think I see streamers coming out of their crest, but not sure...closer pics from the side of their head would be useful! Also do you see any hackle or saddle feathering that looks more flowy than flat? Hoping you can keep your puffballs!
I am hatching black bearded silkies for the first time, they're in lockdown now and I am praying for at least one hennie!

Awesome thanks so much tonight when they come inside I’ll try & get better pictures of the front and the side as well as underneath their beaks as well. Hopefully they’re both hens lol

Ahhh I want a bearded silkie.! They’re so cute.!!! I have my fingers crossed for you for at least 1 hen too.! I’m hoping for one at least as well but they’ve been together since I hatched them so I feel like I would have to place them together in a home, separating them would probably freak them out since they’re so close. So I hope they’re both hens so I can keep them both plus my piggy loves them they’re her best friends lol.
Tonight when they come inside I’m going to try and get better pictures from the side and under their beaks as well. & I’m not too sure how to tell the difference between the feathers, this is my first time as a chicken owner so I’m still reading a lot of books & watching videos on raising chickens and sexing them etc. How long have you been raising silkies.?

Thank you.!!!:D
How many silkies do you have.? I want to have 4 all together & I’d love to have a rooster just zoning laws won’t allow him & I love Eddie he’s the sweetest bird and just a character :ya he/she is so funny, our grey baby is closer to my piggy than me lol she doesn’t like coming near us really sometimes she’ll get comfortable and come close to me on her own but I was beginning to think she was a rooster because she is such a mean girl hence her name Regina George lol. Hopefully tonight I can get better pictures so hopefully everyone can see their face & feathers better that way fingers crossed I’ll be able to try & get the sex lol.
