I am on a Project to make some showgirls we dont have any or that I know of here in UK,I have my naked neck cockerel and silkie girls but I need to know what to do with the unwanted birds down the line. When I cross a naked neck x silkie to a pure silkie I will get some naked and some poor quality silkies right???.Will these poor qualitysilkies ever produce the naked neck gene if bred to another silkie?

The naked neck gene is dominant, so it will carry over quite often every generation. Your first generation will look hideous. Don't fret about it. Just keep crossing the ones with the darkest skin, best silkie combs, extra toes. In a few generations you ought to have some that look fairly "showgirl" enough to be sold as such. I have heard of people crossing in polish also to improve the crests as a shortcut to gorgeous birds. Not sure what that would do to the comb genetics, and about guaranteed to mess up the silkie squatty look, as the polish are so upright. If you were a patient person though.... you could maybe work on a line of Giant Showgirls and have all us Americanos drooling like crazy for what you have in England.

What you do is, breed your naked neck to a beautiful silkie, then take those babies and breed them to pure silkie, the naked neck will carry down by generations, you take the most fluffiest ones with naked neck and breed them to pure silkies, this will allow the fullness to keep coming in on your next generations of showgirls.

Keep us updated on your progress, take pics every generation that way you can see how your progress is comeing along and of course to show all of us showgirlaholics.

Thanks shay for the info and advice.the ones that turn out (not naked neck)that I wont need in the project. If I give these away as poor silkies.crossbreeds or whatever, what happens if the new owner mates them to silkies will the naked neck crop up somewhere down the line.I will take some pictures of my foundation birds when the weather gets better,I have a black naked neck cockerel and 2 white/2 black silkies,I also have some naked neck pullets and I intend to get a good quality silkie cockerel for them.I also have some frizzled naked necks but will leave these out of the project for the time being

naked neck will not crop up later. If you don't see it, you don't have the gene. You can rest assured with that. No way to miss if they are naked neck or not. Post pics of your project if you do undertake it, would you please? I'd love to see one started from scratch and I doubt I am the only one that would love to watch your progress.

Like onthespot said, the ones that dont come out with type of naked neck wont carry the geene, you can sell , give those as silkies, but if they have red combs or neck is redder than you make sure to say that they are fathered by another (not silkie) so you can call those a cross.
You want to breed those with the naked necks to pure silkies.

lol yea if you want first a great quility showgirl, leave the frizzled out of it for now, but do try that later one, i would love to see that.
