Hello All! Will anyone have silkies for sale at the Kentucky State Fair?? Aug 20th - 30th I believe.... Would love to see some fully bearded adult silkies in person! We're new to this, our 2 oldest pair (black) are just over 2 months and one buff just over 1 month. We love them dearly and can't wait to get more..especially one more buff to go with the one we have. Be Safe Everyone!

I seen Silkies at the State Fair yesterday. There were not very many though, usually there are more silkies than anything. I think the OEG had the numbers, lots of them. Have you been yet? What did you think of the birds? I was surprised.

We didn't make it, car troubles which I just got done fixin this morning ;-(

We're going to Shepherdsville on Saturday morning hoping to bring home a few new babies!...

I was really disappointed at the quality of the birds this year. I took some pics of birds that I think were sick. They all came from the same man, their heads were odd shaped, looked swollen to me. He had birds there for sale too. The thing is, they were judged and some even placed. The ones that placed were "only" in class. Not bad looking birds, just these funny, misshappen heads. Several of the birds were in poor conditon, many were even featherless in lots of spots on many different birds. I seen the judge give 3 and 4 to "only" birds in the class, stating "does not warrent better placing". I was tempted to buy a tiny call duck and a trio of white showgirls, but resisted because I am now so afraid of disease and I have spent a fortune, literally, on shipped eggs. There were not very many good silkies there, and usually they are stunning. I have seen silkies at the fair that looked like they never left a salon. This year, just average and some no better than hatchery birds. If you can make it up before Sunday night, it is worth it just to study them. I was surprised to see so many Muscovy ducks there too, though I would never guess they were all Muscovy. Some looked like regular ducks to me. I also seen the judge place two Barred Rocks that were obviously NOT barred rocks, but some kind of Cuckoo with yellow legs. The first place bird was nicely barred though, the second was a cuckoo. NO third. I drove all the way from Lexington just to see the birds, but was disappointed in some of them. Sorry, I think I just went on one of those rants! HenZ

Have you ever been to the place in Shepherdsville?...I think it's a poultry auction just past the big flea market...That's where we're going Saturday to see if we can get some!...

Only because I just fixed the truck, I want to run it a few days before driving that far(to Louisville) so we'll probably end up missing the fair this year...

I attended the KY State Fair myself and had call ducks entered and a few chickens, all of my chickens are molting like crazy and did not look their best. I also noticed some sick chickens there...I think they were big cochins...not sure since I stayed away from them, but it makes me glad that I didnt bring my best chickens to show..and I will be keeping the birds I showed in the quarintine pen for thirty days when I get them home.

I didnt see any reall nice silkies for sale there....a few nice whites but they were sneazing and shaking their heads alot.

I wouldnt worry about call ducks getting sick, there are only few diseases out there that they can catch, and if they do they usually fall over dead within a day or two...sad but true.

My son and wife did pretty well....he got reserve call duck in Jrs, and she won best Med. Goose with her Seb.

That's why I'll probably never get brave enough to show....I'd be too worried about bringing some illness home with my birds. Shouldn't the check in people not allow any birds even remotely looking like they're ill to be unloaded and shown?

they have the NPIP people at the door as you bring them in. I would think they would look at the birds at least.

I don't recall ever seeing sick birds at a real show.....they pull them pretty quick.
