So, I ended up with all these silkies from TSC and I'm trying to read up on them as much as possible because they seem much different than the barnyard mixes I bought at an auction last spring. I was wondering if they were as noisy as other breeds. Do the roos crow as much? I know birds vary greatly not only from breed to breed but also within a breed, but I wondered if there was a general consensus about silkies. What are the roos like in general? Kinder? Gentler than other breeds? I'm really hoping to be able to keep a roo or two since my last roo died. Also, there is a roo down the street that is REALLY loud and I wondered if that was why my roo never crowed...if they are less dominant birds, do you think that would keep them quiet? I know that when I had 6 roos, only the most dominant one would ever crow and once I got rid of the dominant one, another would rise to take his place and start crowing.

They crow just like any other breed. Silkie roos can be real jerks or sweetie pies...just depends on the individual bird. I have a silkie roo that was way down in the pecking order...It didn't crow until he had the opportunity at 2 years old....Oh, the sweetest sounding crow ever! I actually think some silkie roo's are louder than standard roos....more shrill.

My silkie roo was loud crowed alot

He also was not very friendly he would hide and attack

my silkie roo crows when my other 2 standard roos crow, but I like his crow the most, makes me crack up everytime I hear him because he tried to out crow the big boys soo bad... As far as his temperment he is pretty sweet to me and my DH, he is the tuffest of all my boys and doesnt take crap from any of the other roos (guess he has to because he is soo small), and he is very good with the ladys (always calling them over when he finds food for them, rushes over to protect them is a hawk fly's over, etc.) oh and I got him from Ideal hatchery

My first chickens were Silkies, and 3 of them were roosters. One was a beautiful black one, and I had two partridge roos. There were nice to look at, but so loud! I had to rehome them. Now I have only one roo that I got at a later time, and he's a buff Silkie. He barely crows at all, and when he does he sounds like a baby crying - seriously! He goes ee-eeeeeeeeee, ee-eeeeeeeee. I don't think he's normal though. I think he may have some gender issues. He's over a year old and I only heard him start crowing maybe a month or so ago. Plus, he only crows two or three times in the morning, then he stops. I will not be getting any more roos. This guy has a forever home.

Now the females, they're another story. The partridge female I have is the loudest hen I have. She always seems to have something to complain about. I also have a cuckoo silkie that is generally very quiet, but when she gets going she's pretty loud as well.

They are pretty nice to look at, though!
