How do you keep a silkie's feathers from breaking? I show my silkies and the only thing that I have heard of is to keep them in a cage, but I can't afford to go buy a bunch of cages. Also, I think my silkies would be happier to be outside.

If you can put them in an area with sand during the day it will help. I presume you are talking about foot feathers. Other than that there should be not feather breakage unless they are being bred. You need to remove the rooster for the ones you want to show.

foot feathers will break no matter what you do, if they get to walk around, they will break. Cages will break them too, if the feathers rub against the sides of the cage. the best is nice deep clean woodshavings but nothing is a guaranty.
