I breed silkies and I promise you there is no way to know for sure until they crow or lay an egg. Cockerels will usually crow around15-16 weeks and usually start developing streamers in crest and enlarged comb rapidly after they crow.

Forgive me for hijacking this thread but I can’t work out how to start a new thread. I have a white silkie chicken named Salt, who is about 5-6 months old. I am not sure if it’s a hen or a roo. I know it’s very difficult to tell with silkies but can I please ask you guys for an opinion? She/he paces anxiously up and down the coop. None of the others do that. Is that a hen thing or a rooster thing? His/ her head is a bit dirty in the pics as it’s very muddy in the coop. Thank you so much for any help 🙏🏻

Look like a hen with the rounded tail and crest, and not crowing at 6 months old. The pacing is she is about to lay soon and looking for a nest. If you don’t have older chickens that lay you can put a fake egg or golf ball in the nest to give her the idea. Although I my silkies tend to prefer a corner of the coop.

Thank you so much for your reply! I’m hoping it’s a hen but I was concerned about the well developed wattles and comb. 😊
