We got 9 silkie chicks at Easter excited for our new adventure in chicken owning and so far have had 5 out of the 9 prove to be roo's, these are our last three, which happens to also be our kids favorite ones. While watering this morning my husband suspected he heard another doodler, but he would not perform for an audience. Oh- nooo! If this is true there will be tears! I am suspicious of 2 options 1) the gray/blue one - although she is much more what I would call hen shaped. Rounder and plump. She is also more feisty. 2) the other two are booth roos, they are more lean and have the same body shape. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. We love our little friends, but we are city folk and can not keep a rooster. :(

I am new to Silkies also but I think that one in the last picture is a rooster. I could be totally wrong but my little rooster, who is now crowing, has a comb that is very large like the one in the last picture.

i to think that last one does look like a roo the black one might be but i dont know

Guess I'll be getting up at sunrise to see who the guilty party is. Thank you for your thoughts.

It's kind of a long story, we were told of a local farm that has silkies, our breed of choice after much reading up on them. went to purchase 3. We were told they sell a min of 6 and the very nice lady told us it was a goo idea anyway in case there were roosters. As my children played around her farm and helping her with a few chores she ended up giving them each a "bonus" chick sending us home with 9. Our city ordnance only allows 6 so we were in a bit of a panic but figured some might be Roos so time would tell. When the time came for them to move outside we gave 3 to my dad ( who has acreage but had no chickens as yet) at the time we thought 2 were Roos and 1 was hen. That has held true thinking we then had 6 hens.. In time 2 of ours showed there doodling skills so they too moved to my dads. And last week another one. Leaving us down to 3. I have since heard from the person that recommended the farm that we can return the Roos for another chick?? Not sure what we want to do at tis point. My dad who lives alone has become quite friendly with his little flock, they eat breakfast together and help him in the garden he says.
I suppose if all of these are Roos we'll headed back to the farm... :(
Random thought as I am learning - none of these chicks want to go into or sleep in the nesting boxes- is that a behavioral sign as well? And yes as far as feathers go the black and white one are the same size, pretty much have the same shape. The gray one is more rounded and plumper. when I pick them up He/she feels fuller the other two feel more boney.
