wondering if it is necessary for my silkies to have a heat lamp at night or not…
I have read yes it is, no it’s not because it doesn’t get cold enough where I live… Just wanting opinions, I live in North Georgia and it very rarely gets very cold here

How old are they? Any chicks need heat until they are feathered enough not to... a regular light bulb inside a heatlamp reflector usually works in warmer climates, i live in new mexico and depending on the time of year a regular heat lamp bulb would make it too hot. Especially since i brood in a 2x3 plastic tub.

If they are adults and you are wondering about the winter, i have never used heat lamps for adults and i think my area's colder than yours. But not sure, my lows get to 15, usually winter lows are 23 to 32. My silkies have a little house they sleep in, (they are in rabbit hutches actually which are a big wire cage with a smal wood " room") I cover them well at night on the colder nights but the rest of the winter they are fine just with straw in their "rooms" for some reason my silkies have never been interested in roosts...

Then they should be fine. What are your low temps? Its already warming up so I'm sure they are fine now.

I would be more concerned about the high temps, last year when it got to the over 100 months in july and august, (dry heat here and I know moist heat feels hotter to humans don't know about birds...) anyway,
When it got that hot I had to bring my silkies in and have them in the a.c. i was being a little over careful i think because it was my first time with silkies, i think this year i will try frozen water bottles. But my point is that they are sensitive to heat. Though i left the cochins out and they were fine in the heat.
