silkies nesting

I am new to silkies. They have thier own coop and run with attached nesting box. They sleep in what was built as nest box I an just wondering if I did something wrong. Or will they lay in them when they are ready? it is a small coop only 6x4 the nest box is tp the back and a smaller space as it is built on. I am sure it is warmer for them. Are they just hanging out in the warm spot?

Silkies are a funny creature...they don't roost and they pretty much lay wherever they want. My husband built beautiful nesting boxes for ours, low to the ground and they don't lay eggs in them. They'll get up there to sleep and to scratch around in the bedding, but they lay their eggs on the ground--mostly in the corners of the run. When a silkie goes broody, you will know! They go broody to the EXTREME!!!

I ofetn have 2-3 hens all sitting on eggs together. If one gets up to get a drink, the other will steal their eggs and when that one gets up, that will steal it's eggs back! lol They're quite comical!!!

Thanks I was just wondering if I had made a bone head mistake with the coop. I hope to have lots of broody going on.

your coop sounds great I have silkies
that roost and never go into their small coop
that is inside a large
fenced dog run.and I have given them all the comforts.
fresh wood shavings in the nests. and straw on the dirt floor.
for the colder days . They only go into their small coop
when its egg laying time.which hasnt been for a while now.

I have 3 Silkies and a mixed Silkie. At this point there are always at least one or two that are broody at a time. i have had as many as three broody at the same time.

They are diving me nuts.

They are just to cute to not have though.

Silkies are beautiful. We have 4 nesting boxes. There is always a Hen in 3 nesting boxes.
Sometimes two hens in one nesting box. Ours do NOT roost. We have a covered run for
Winter and they go from the run to the Coop. We have food, water, oyster shells always
for them in the coop. Every evening we bring warm oatmeal or brown rice.

Some lay in the nexting boxes and some on the floor. Our floor is hay and my husband uses a pooper scopper daily. So our coop is clean. No problem. Our Silkies are a treasure. They
have been laying 6 to 10 eggs daily. Enough for our family and we have eggs to sell.
